The Thursday Murder Club (Thursday Murder Club, #1) by Richard Osman

The Thursday Murder Club (Thursday Murder Club, #1)The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Part One
A charming book. The Thursday Murder Club comprises seniors residing in a retirement village (Coopers Chase). Ron Ritchie (prominent in the Union in his day) and his son, a famous boxer, have a connection to the deceased victim. Joyce a former nurse, (has a thing for Bernard. Sadly Bernard appears to be devoted to his dead wife's memory. Joyce also has a daughter who does accounting.) Elizabeth seems to have been M16 in another life and has friends she can call on for favors when she can't scheme her way to the desired result. Unfortunately her husband Stephen suffers from dementia. Ibrahim a former therapist seems to take a back seat to the other three but does seem to be very precise when he has information to deliver. And former member Penny (a former inspector in the Kent police) who Joyce visits and gives updates to even though she is in a coma. Penny's husband John is glued to Penny's bedside.

The book begins when PC Donna De Freitas delivers a speech to the Thursday Murder Club and winds up being quizzed by them. Ian Ventham the developer of Coopers Chase wants to move a graveyard in order to build more units he also wants to replace his contractor Tony Curran with Bogdan in order to save money. Ian is worried about Tony's reaction so he confronts him at Coopers Chase where the members of the Thursday Murder Club witness the row. Shortly afterward Tony is bludgeoned to death in his kitchen and Ian is the prime suspect. Determined to move ahead with the project Ian tries to have the graves dug up at the crack of dawn but the seniors thwart him by blocking the path. While the seniors are confronting Ian, Bogdan goes to the graveyard and starts to dig up the newer graves where he stumbles upon something odd a skeleton outside the casket, as well as the one inside the casket. Fearing the project will be delayed he reburies both skeletons until he can talk to Ian. Before Bogdan has a chance to tell Ian what he discovered, Ian gets into a confrontation with Father Mackie and a slight scuffle ensues shortly afterward Ian dies of an apparent stroke or heart attack. So now we have two dead men Tony Curran and his partner Ian Ventham.

It turns out that Ian was injected with fentanyl, which caused his death. Bernard commits suicide due to his guilt over burying his late wife's ashes under the park bench he is always sitting on instead of allowing their daughters to spread her ashes in the Ganges River as she wanted. The police are led to believe that Turkish Gianni killed Tony Curran, but later Bogdan confesses to Stephen and explains that Tony Curran ordered Turkish Gianni to kill the taxi driver (Bogdan's friend) that drove Gianni and the dead drug dealer Tony shot out of town to bury. Enraged over his friend's death Bogdan killed Turkish Gianni and made it look like he fled town before the police could arrest him. Then years later when he had the opportunity he killed Tony. For some reason even though The Thursday Murder Club suspect Bogdan of the murders they choose not to pursue his guilt.

On the other hand, The Thursday Murder Club confronts John but allows him to assist in Penny's death before taking his own life. He killed Ian to keep the cemetery from being dug up as Penny had hidden the body of the young man she killed there. The man had killed his girlfriend and gotten away with it.

Father Mackie had impregnated one of the nuns at the convent and she hung herself when her pregnancy was discovered. In order for her to be buried in the hollowed ground of the cemetery he agreed to leave the priesthood quietly.

A World of Curiosities (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #18) by Louise Penny (Goodreads Author)

A World of Curiosities (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #18)A World of Curiosities by Louise Penny
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I think I would have probably enjoyed it more if I had been familiar with the series and was familiar with the characters. I found the first part of the book slow going as they kept referencing the past, once we got to the actual plot and things progressed in a straight line I enjoyed it much more, but without the flashbacks, to the past, it wouldn't have made sense.

When Armand and Jean-Guy first met they were trying to solve the murder of a mother whose two children had been sexually abused to feed her drug habit. It was also revealed that the local police were corrupt and that some of the officers had actually been customers. Armand saw the young boy Sam, as evil and thought he bore more of a responsibility for his Mother's death than Jean-Guy did. Jean-Guy actually took Sam an interest in Sam and taught him how to tie knots after he was thrown out of his boy scout troop. Fiona spent time in prison for her Mother's murder, even though Armand championed her and when she was released welcomed her into his home. Armand is also haunted by a serial killer named Fleming and his only comfort is that Fleming is behind bars.

After a painting is found in a walled-up room clues that Fleming has escaped abound, when Armand visits the prison he realizes right away that the prisoner everyone believes to be Fleming isn't him, proving it is a different matter. So he is pretty much on his own to hunt Fleming down. In the end, it's almost too late when Armand realizes Fleming's identity and discovers that Fiona is his daughter.

Amelia Choquet whose father killed Armand's parents in a drunk driving accident saves his life and the life of his wife and son-in-law. Ironically when she first applied for a job Armand denied her request in revenge for what her Father did but later changed his mind and gave her a chance

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

All my favorite characters made an appearance including Kidd.

5 billionaires decide to kill assholes, Lucas & Virgil get pulled in to track them down and the book ends with a bloody showdown. Two of the five are still in the wind at the end of the book and still intent on delivering vigilante justice. Lucas and Virgil were both shot so I am sure once they are healed up they will be hot on their trails. Virgil has a book deal in the works and is on his way to becoming a successful author.

Fast paced adventure. Denis has just got out of the Ant Farm and decides to rob a convenience store and drags his younger brother Kevin along. Unfortunately for Dennis the store owner is tired of being robbed and pulls a gun on the hooligans. Dennis fights him for the gun and the store owner is killed. The Winners (Beartown, #3)

The Winners by Fredrik Backman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I hate this book..I love this book..brilliantly written but oh so sad. A lot of my favorite characters are going to die in this book. Set 2 years after Us Against You The book begins with a storm and two deaths Ramona (the owner of the Bearskin aka Benji's at the end of the book.) dies of old age. And Ruth a girl we barely knew dies of an overdose far away and her parents have brought her home to bury. Unfortunately Ruth's brother (Matteo) blames hockey and hockey players for her death specifically Mumble (Beartown's goalie) and his former friend(Rodri). Matteo should have really blamed his Religious Fruitcake parents who called their daughter a liar and told the police she was making the rape allegations against Rodri up. Ruth ran away from home after that. Maya and Benji come home for Ramona's funeral. Zackell recruits a new hockey player Big City.

Meanwhile Tails has gotten Peter involved in a Ponzi scheme that is threatening to blow up with the newspaper editor investigating it. Peter is oblivious to all the trouble he is in, but Tails goes to Kira for help and she eventually tells Peter what is going on. In the end Tails will take the blame for everything.

Bobo falls for a girl (Tess) from Hed, Peter and Kira reconnect, and Matteo becomes angrier and angrier at Hockey players. He poisons Sune's dog Bang. I really hated that and I wish that they had investigated Bang's murder and put Matteo away for it. But other than the Pack and Sune no one seems to care. Although a fight does break out at the hockey ring when some of the Hed players start barking.

 Ruth writes in her diary

"That's how you teach boys that they have rights over us. Then we get bigger and then they rape us..." She continues, "Parents always think they have to talk to their daughters about guys. But you don't have to talk to us about guys because we already know all that, for f---'s sake, because we're the ones they rape!! Talk to your damn sons instead!!! Teach them to talk to each other and teach them to stop each other. Raise just one f---ing boy somewhere who can become a head teacher who understands that when boys pull girls by the hair, it's the f---ing boys there's something wrong with."

After the fight in the hockey ring Kira and Hannah (Tess's Mother and a midwife) lead a candlelight procession through the two towns and things seem to settle down until the next hockey match. Matteo sneaks into the Beartown locker room with a pistol and attempts to shoot Mumble. Alicia and Benji are in the locker room and Alicia is standing in front of Mumble asking questions so Benji does the only thing he can to save Alicia's life he flies into Matteo taking two bullets to the chest. Thankfully Ana's Father is at the game and has gone to make sure he locked his truck when he sees Matteo with the pistol. He isn't fast enough to stop him from shooting Benji, but he is able to shoot him before he can shoot anyone else. Lev and Ana help him get away before the authorities get there so no one will know he killed Matteo.

I actually think there may be another book about Alicia in the future.

The Hunt (Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus, #27)

The Hunt (Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus, #27)The Hunt by Faye Kellerman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It's sort of bittersweet as she killed off one of my favorite characters, Chris Donatti. I always felt that there was a good person inside who had been crushed by his traumatic and brutal childhood. And that if Terry hadn't used him when it was convenient for her and abandoned him he could have been redeemed. I also think this is probably the end of the series as Peter Decker and Rina are retiring to Israel. She may be planning for Cindy or McAdams to take over

This book picks up where The Lost Boys leaves off. Being too far away to help his Mother (Terry) himself Gabe calls Chris (his Dad). Chris is still in love with Terry and immediately goes to rescue her and her daughter (Juleen) after her young son (Sanjay) is kidnapped and Terry is brutally beaten. Terry decides the way to get her son back is to use Chris' feeling for her and she agrees to marry him in exchange for Chris paying off her husband's gambling debts. Chris uses Sanjay's kidnapping as leverage to get Devek to give Terry a favorable divorce. Once the divorce is granted Chris and Terry remarry and Chris flies to India to pay the kidnappers and bring Sanjay back to Terry. When he returns Terry is missing. He goes to the Decker's for help. Peter and Rina fly with Chris to Nevada to look for Terry and Cindy takes care of Juleen and Sanjay. Rina realizes a former girlfriend (Talia) of Chris' kidnapped Terry and left her to die of exposure in a shack in the mountains. They find Terry but on the way to the hospital she begins to hemorrhage from a miscarriage. Talia is arrested. After Terry's funeral Cindy agrees to raise Juleen who wants to stay in the States and Chris offers to provide financial support. Sanjay returns to India with his Father. Chris commits suicide a few months after the death of his wife and unborn daughter.

The body in the woods is Pauline. It turns out her girlfriend Elsie stabbed her when Elise saw Pauline with her ex husband Brock Baer. Being an ex con who had been charged with stalking and domestic abuse he didn't think anyone would believe him so he helped Elise bury the body. After burying Pauline in the woods Elise with through with her plans to help Bertram and Kathrine elope to Germany.

Rina and Peter leave for Israel.

Fiona's story which was interesting and that I preferred to the main plot was rushed. The main plot was basically Seth Caleb pissed a very bad guy (Bohdan) off, the very bad guy wanted him dead and extended his hatred to Jane MacGuire once he discovered her connection to Caleb. A lot of people die and MacDuff's home is damaged in his pursuit of kidnapping Jane and her unborn child to use as bait. Eventually a trap is set for Bohdan and he is killed.

During all the chaos Jane decides to learn more about Fiona, the woman whose portrait graces MacDuff's Run and whom everyone says Jane resembles. Jane discovers that Fiona's Father was marrying her off for money but that she disappeared before the wedding could take place. She also discovers the identity of the artist who painted her portrait and that he did some murals for a train car (an antique car that gets destroyed during Bohdan's attempt to kill Jane and Caleb). Clues lead her to learning that the artist (Farrell) and Fiona were in love and that he left for America shortly before Fiona was to marry. Once in America he changed his name and disappeared. A hidden letter reveals that he sent for Fiona and engineered her escape. And shortly before the train car was destroyed Jane finds clues to a second treasure that Cira hid.

Jane has her baby at MacDuff's Run and names her Cira.

The Investigator (Letty Davenport #1)The Investigator by John Sandford
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

The dog should not have been shot in the head. One of the big problems in the world is the police thinking they can shoot our pets with impunity. The officer should have at least faced charges and been severely punished for killing the dog. Pets have the right to guard their homes and they can't distinguish between police officers and criminals. Not to mention these police officers were not in uniform and didn't identify themselves. I wish the homeowner had killed the bastard cop that murdered his dog. They weren't even in any danger at the point the dog was killed as it had been placed on the other side of the fence.

I enjoyed reading about a grown up Letty. She is a lot like Lucas it's hard to believe she isn't his biological daughter they are so much alike. In this book Letty and John Kaiser are hot on the trail of oil thieves, they suspect the money is being used to finance homegrown terrorism opposed to illegal immigrants crossing the border. Things come to a head in Pershing Texas when a carnival of immigrants attempt to cross the border.

By Gaslight by Steven Price

By GaslightBy Gaslight by Steven Price
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which the abuser attempts to sow self-doubt and confusion in their victim's mind. Typically, gaslighters are seeking to gain power and control over the other person, by distorting reality and forcing them to question their own judgment and intuition.
This book seems to be a great example.

I loved Ordinary Monsters that he wrote under another name so thought I would give some of his other books a try. I found this tedious and slow going at times. The book revolves around William Pinkerton's obsession with finding Edward Shade, a young boy who was one of his Father Allan Pinkerton's spies during the Civil War. And I found Edward Shade's history very compelling and the accounts of the Civil War riveting. Alas the hunt for Edward Shade was rather boring and long winded.

William comes to London, England believing that a woman named Charlotte can lead him to Edward Shade. Trying to escape from his surveillance she jumps into the Thames and is believed to be dead when a head resembling her is found, her various body parts are found later. Her former lover Adam Foole is distraught and ask for William's help in finding Charlotte's killer. As they hunt for clues to what happened to Charlotte we begin to learn of William's complicated history with his Father. And a wary respect grows between the two men. Then at a seance Adam Foole's identity as Edward Shade is revealed and we learn of Edward's love for Allan Pinkerton and why he thought Pinkerton sent a man to kill him and the long years he spent in a Confederate prison. The confrontation between the two that lead to Allan's obsession with keeping track of Shade. A cat and mouse game ensues between William (Allan's son) and Adam Foole (the orphan boy who loved Allan as if he was his Father)

The game is further complicated when Charlotte resurfaces and involves Foole in her plot for revenge. Just when it looks as if William is going to capture Edward Shade, an old friend reveals the truth about Allan's obsession with Edward Shade, he wasn't hunting Edward Shade to capture him he was keeping track of him in order to provide aid thus the lack of papers documenting Pinkerton's success in finding Edward Shade.

There really isn't a resolution William grows old but continues to look for Edward Shade.

Very annoying how Lily and Augusta's story kept getting interrupted by Everly's story which I found tedious.

I was struck by the chief difference between the Titanic and the Pulaski on the Titanic only the women and the children of the rich had the chance to get on a life boat (in fact the poor in steerage were locked below decks and didn't even have the opportunity to jump off the Titanic before it sunk) , on the Pulaski men, women, children, slaves all had an equal chance to board one of the life boats.

L.A. Requiem (Elvis Cole, #8)

L.A. Requiem (Elvis Cole, #8)L.A. Requiem by Robert Crais
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The book I have been waiting for finally some answers about Joe Pike and I love him now more than ever.

(view spoiler) When a former girlfriend (Karen Garcia) of Pike's goes missing her Father ask Pike for help finding her and he brings Elvis Cole aboard. Unfortunately her body is discovered by some hikers, but due to the police refusing to look for her when she first goes missing her Father (who is a wealthy business man with pull) insist that Pike and Cole be part of the investigation. Things soon deteriorate when Krantz is brought in to head up the investigation.

Pike humiliated Krantz year's ago when he was investigating Pike's partner ( Wozniak, who was a dirty cop) and he has been itching to get even ever since. But he isn't the only one who wants to get even with Pike. Cole soon tumbles to the fact that they suspect one of the hikers (Dersh) in the killing when he realizes they have the guy staked out. But while he agrees the hikers were hiding something he doesn't think the guy is a killer. Digging deeper he discovers that the case in part of a series of killings. The victims don't seem to have any connection so they suspect a serial killer, and they are determined to keep a lid on it. But someone leaks the info to the media right before Karen Garcia's funeral. Then things get way worse Dersh winds up dead and a eye witness puts Pike at the scene even though he was miles away at the time. Krantz can't wait to arrest Pike and the evidence is piling up against him. An impromptu prison break has Pike showing up at Cole's shortly before Lucy arrives and she has a melt down when she finds him there. I kind of understand her POV as she could lose her law license and custody of her son if anyone knew she was aware of Pike being there and didn't report it but...she leaves in a huff, when Cole insist Pike stay until full dark when he will have a better chance of getting away. To further complicate matters when she returns latter that night for her purse she finds him hugging Samantha Dolan (a cop who is helping Cole).

Dolan and Cole dig into the last case Pike worked as a cop, where he supposedly saved the pedophile DeVille's life and killed Wozniak in the process. But Cole quickly realizes that Wozniak isn't the connection it's Deville when they find the witness list of people who had filed complaints against Deville and six of the victims are on it. They quickly realize Laurence Sobek is the killer and track down his Mother, a picture of him as an adult reveals how he knew what the police were up to and was able to gain access to so much information he is working as a civilian employee at Parker Center delivering the mail using the assumed name Curtis Wood. Cole even tried to chat him up to get info at one point. Cole calls Pike to let him know what is going on and that Wozniak's name will come up. Pike goes to tell Wozniak's wife Paulette and Cole and Dolan continue to Parker Center to tell Krantz and Bishop (Krantz's boss). They get a warrant for Sobek/Wood's home and while entering the property Samantha Dolan is killed by a booby trap. Pictures of Ben at tennis camp and Lucy are discovered and Cole and the police put them under lock down but Cole realizes that they are merely a distraction and that Wozniak's wife and daughter are the target. A few police are left behind to protect Lucy and Ben in case Cole is wrong but Cole and the majority of police head to Wozniak's home.

Sobek shot Pike in the back while he was talking to Paulette (the love of Pike's life and she returns his feelings) Pike manages to shoot him but Sobek catches Pike off guard and shoots him in the chest when Cole and the police arrive Pike is down and Paulette and her daughter are being held hostage. Cole and Krantz go in but Sobek gets the drop on them, Cole is badly wounded in the arm he uses to shoot and Krantz puts down his gun to keep Sobek from shooting Paulette Pike who everyone assumes is dead or dying shoots and kills Sobek. Krantz tries to arrest Pike but Cole interferes and Pike escapes. Cole loses his license and is a convicted felon after he takes a plea deal.

Frank Garcia gets his license back for him.

Cole realizes what is missing in the police report on Dersh's murder (the car) and points it out to John Chen. With Cole's help Chen finds the oil drips that prove it was Sobek who killed Dersh not Pike and he is cleared.

Ordinary Monsters (The Talents Trilogy #1)

Ordinary Monsters

Ordinary Monsters by J.M. Miro
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If I could give it 10 stars I would, this is the first book I have been excited about in ages and I can't wait for the next in the series. Set in Victorian England this thriller delivers nonstop action and chills galore.

(view spoiler)

Alice Quicke (normal) woman PI and Frank Coulton (talent strength) have been sent by Berghast (used to have the talent of healing) to find two boys with talents and protect them from Jacob Marber (talent manipulating dust) who supposedly would feed them to the drughr if he gets to them first. Charlie Ovid is a mulatto from Mississippi who has the talent of healing himself. When Alice and Coulton find him he is being held in a warehouse in Natchez after his failed execution. Alice and Coulton help him escape and believing that he is the boy Jacob is most interested in Coulton takes him on to England and sends Alice after Marlow (who glows blue and has the ability to heal (mend) others as well as kill (melt) with his talent). Alice finds Marlowe working at a circus with his guardian Brynt. Brynt is heartbroken to have the boy who she thinks of as her own taken away, when Jacob Marber arrives shortly after Alice and Marlowe leave and destroys the circus to get information about Marlowe's whereabouts Brynt follows him. Jacob Marber catches up with Alice and Marlow shortly before they catch a ship for England, Alice is seriously injured and Marlowe fights him off and heals Alice so they can catch the ship.

Back in England Charlie is settling in to Mrs Harrogate's (normal) home in London as they wait for Coulton and Marlowe to arrive, before they leave for Cairndale in Scotland. Charlie has a secret he has a ring with the Cairndale crest on it that was given to his Mother by his Father, who died on the way West. Charlie doesn't have any memories of his Father. Unfortunately Mrs Harrogate believes she has captured the litch (zombie) Walter, and plans to take him to Cairndale with the boys for Dr Berghast to question. Walter escapes and seriously injures Charlie who is slow to heal from the wounds Walter inflicted. Coulton recaptures him in time for them to take Walter on the train to Cairndale with them once Alice and Marlowe arrive. As a precaution Mrs Harrogate stays in a separate compartment with the litch Walter while Coulton stays with Alice and the boys in another compartment at the other end of the train. Unfortunately Jacob Marber can always find Walter and he plans to ambush the train. Brynt watches him from hiding and when Jacob stops the train she follows him aboard. Mrs Harrogate and Coulton try to stop Jacob and Walter. Mrs Harrogate is badly injured and Coulton is turned into a litch. Brynt sacrifices her life to throw Walter off the train allowing Alice and Marlowe to defeat an injured Jacob Marber. Mrs Harrogate, Alice, Charlie and Marlowe arrive at Cairndale believing that Coulton is dead. Walter is also at Cairndale imprisoned in the cellar. Marlow learns that as a baby he was taken from Cairndale by his nursemaid, and that they have been searching for him ever since.

The boys like their teacher Miss Davenshaw (who is normal and blind) and their classmates; Komako (who manipulates dust like Jacob) she was found in Tokyo by Coulton and Jacob and Jacob helped her find the strength to let her sister who she had accidental turned into a litch go. It was on their voyage back to London that the drughr convinced Jacob to come with her and he disappeared off the ship. By the time he realized the drughr couldn't keep her promise to restore his twin brother (Bertolt) to life and her true nature no one at Cairndale would help him. Ribs (invisible) appeared on the ship and revealed herself to Coulton and Komako after playing tricks on them. Oskar (who can created a flesh giant which he calls Lymenion). We didn't learn much about Oskar's past in this book. After Alice and Mrs Harrogate leave for London the kids learn that Berghast is up to no good. Ribs, Oskar and Kokomo travel to town and discover that Dr Berghast has been trying to turn talents who have lost their powers into glyphics, since the glyphic (tree like thing) that protects Cairndale and keeps the orsine ( door to the world of the dead) closed is dying. The experiments have all been failures and the children have been left in a horrible state. Instead of allowing Berghast to kill them a kindly shop keeper is tending to them. Meanwhile Dr Berghast tricked Marlowe and Charlie into going into the orsine after a glove. They meet Jacob in the world of the dead after they find the glove. Charlie was in another area when Jacob appeared and stayed hidden, so Jacob never knew he was there. Jacob tied Marlowe up to protect him and left the glove with him. He also revealed that the drughr was Marlowe's Mother. They never came out and said it but I think Jacob was his Father. Jacob realizing that both the drughr and Berghast was evil planned to kill them both and he didn't want either one to have the glove as it would give them to much power. After Jacob left Charlie came out of hiding and tried to free Marlowe but he couldn't he had already stayed in the World of the Dead to long. Marlowe sent him back and he took the glove with him. Dr Berghast was surprised that Charlie was still alive as he expected him to die in the World of the Dead and when he saw the ring revealed that it had saved him. But he was furious Marlowe was left behind. Berghast took the glove and sent Charlie away and refused to allow anyone to look for Marlowe.

Alice and Mrs Harrogate found the weir-bents needed to summon the keywrasse (a cat that can grow larger it is controlled by weir-bents). They summon the keywrasse and follow it to the litch who they discover is Coulton and follow him into an ambush planned by Jacob Marber. Mrs Harrogate is crippled in the encounter and Marber and Coulton escape. Marlowe found his own way back to Cairndale, but Dr Berghast keeps him away from everyone, so Charlie and the others believe he is still trapped in the World of the Dead.

Alice and Mrs Harrogate arrive at Cairndale, Walter escapes from the cellar and kills the glyphic allowing Jacob Marber to enter Cairndale. Berghast uses Marlowe as bait to summon the drughr and the glove to drain her power. Mrs Harrogate goes to the island to warn Berghast and Alice stays behind with the kids to fight Jacob Marber and Coulton. Alice sends Charlie to the island to seal the orsine after they talk to Komako, Oskar and Ribs, but the dead eat the glyphic's heart before he can use it to seal the orsine. When he gets to the orsine he finds that Berghast has stabbed Mrs Harrogate and badly injured Marlowe. Charlie tries to stab Berghast but Berghast is able to stop him and drain Charlie of his power to heal. Before she dies Mrs Harrogate summons the strength to push Berghast into the orsine. Marlowe tells Charlie that he can seal the orsine, Brynt told him how but that he has to enter it to do so. He refuses to allow Charlie to enter the orsine with him and tells him he needs him on the side of the living to help him find a way out.

Alice gives the weir-bents to the keywrasse so that it is free to choose it's fate. When Marber attacks Alice the keywrasse chooses to attack Marber and save her. Freed from Marber's control Coulton begs Alice to kill him. Alice and the kids flee Cairndale, as the island explodes. When Charlie comes too he finds Miss Davenshaw who is gripping Berghast journal that reveals their is a second orsine. He takes Miss Davenshaw to Mrs Harrogate's house in London and eventually Alice and the kids arrive. They decide to go find Marlow.

Dog on It (A Chet and Bernie Mystery, #1)

Dog on It (A Chet and Bernie Mystery, #1)Dog on It by Spencer Quinn
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I guess I expected Chet to be more like my dog Fenris. I was frustrated with how easily he was distracted and annoyed that Bernie seemed to be extremely dense especially when it came to communicating with Chet.

Really Chet when the chain was clinking behind you couldn't you have picked it up in your mouth and ran with it!!!

Also annoyed that apparently Chet isn't neutered and is allowed to run lose. That Chet isn't micro-chipped and that when he goes missing his owner (Bernie) who is supposed to be a PI does very little to find him. In fact he would have been murdered at the animal shelter if it hadn't been for the reporter recognizing him.

It seems that dumb luck plays a huge role in Bernie and Chet's survival as well as in solving the case.

The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths (Goodreads Author)

The Crossing PlacesThe Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I really wanted to like this book, I have been looking for a series with an archeological theme since I finished the Amelia Peabody series Crocodile on the Sandbank. Alas I can't stand HUSBAND STEALING SLUT RUTH.

Apparently at some point in the past Peter was madly in love with her but she kicked him to the curb and he eventually married someone else and had a child. Now he is back and professing his undying love to Ruth. Alas Ruth isn't interested because she is sleeping with Nelson, the married police inspector and at the end of the book Ruth reveals that she is PG with his child. And why we had to put up with the drivel about Ruth and Shona's affairs with married men is beyond me as it added nothing to the plot.

Also a cat had it's cut throat which really didn't add anything to the plot either.

The plot revolves around two missing girls. The first Lucy has been missing 10 years, Ruth is called in to examine some bones found on the Saltmarsh, that Nelson thinks might be Lucy's remains. The bones turn out to be from a girl buried during the Iron Age another girl goes missing and Ruth discovers her remains at the site of the henge. Later she realized her friend and mentor Eric was the letter writer and mistakenly believing that he is also the killer she flees into the Saltmarsh to escape him and unbelievable stumbles upon Lucy's cell.

And this is the other problem with the story apparently Lucy was hidden in plain site for 10 years. During this exhaustive search of the area 10 years ago not one person thought to check the hide. And in ensuing years not one birdwatcher stumbled upon the hiding place. Also the book had very little to do with archaeology.

If anyone knows of a series in the Amelia Peabody vein please let me know.

A Face to Die For by Iris Johansen (Goodreads Author)

A Face to Die ForA Face to Die For by Iris Johansen
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

If you haven't read The Bullet this book won't make any sense.

Eve is hiding from the President of the U.S.(Madlock) in a village in Robaku, Maldara Smokescreen, when her friend Jill comes to call she wants Eve to help Riley Smith reconstruct the skull of Helen of Troy when Riley finds Helen's burial spot. In an effort to get to Eve and Riley the village is attacked by Dakar and many of the villagers are hurt/killed. Eve decides to help Riley and Novak ask Michael Cade (thankfully he is usually referred to as Cade) to partner with Riley and keep both women safe. Joe eventually leaves Michael in Seth and Jane's care and joins them

I wish they had told more about Helen of Troy and the myths surrounding her I really felt like her story could have been explored further, and that the addition of The Bullet plot detracted from Riley & Cade's story.

Predictably Riley finds Helen's tomb, Eve does the reconstruction and Dakar discovers where they are at when Eve and Riley are separated from Joe and Cade. Eve and Riley run for their lives with Helen's skull in tow. They are captured by Dakar and his men and Joe shows up in time to kill Dakar and his men with Riley making a daring rescue of Helen's skull.

Cade plots to kill Madlock in order to keep everyone safe. The book ends with Madlock's death and Helen of Troy being ensconced at Cade's London estate.

The Silent Sister (Riley MacPherson, #1)

The Silent Sister (Riley MacPherson, #1)The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Serious plot holes detracted from the enjoyment of the book. Really I am supposed to believe when their teenage daughter turned up pregnant her parents didn't bother to find out who the Father was? I am supposed to believe that a U.S. Marshal didn't notice his daughter was being abused by her music teacher? and I am supposed to believe that when his daughter shot the music teacher in their home he didn't bother to INVESTIGATE the circumstances? Then when he helps her fake her suicide I am supposed to believe he brought Tom into the picture. I mean really you go to the trouble of faking your daughters death so she can avoid prison and you bring someone unreliable into the plot?

Then there is this entire Lisa/Ann/Jade will go to prison for murder if anyone finds out she is alive. I really think a good lawyer could get her out on self defense and PTS. I mean really you expect me to believe that a jury would have convicted a 17 year old girl who shot the man who molested her as a child and raped her when she was 14 and who came into her home and threatened to take their daughter from her? I get Jade didn't want Riley to know her Father was a rapist, but...

And then there was the fact nobody bothered to tell Riley that she was adopted or that her sister had been accused of murder. Her Father had a secret life where he hung out with Jade and her family and nobody not even his girlfriend guessed?

And nobody noticed that the fiddle player for a blue grass band looked an awful lot like the violinist wanted for murder?

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

It was OK, definitely written to appeal to a male audience. I can't imagine any woman walking around in the nude as much as the Congresswoman does in real life. And honestly Pitt's affair with the Congresswoman was totally unnecessary to the plot.

A devious man's bid for power leads him to massacre one man's family in order to get his cooperation with "Operation Wild Rose". Another man's greed leads to a missile carrying Quick Death "QD" to be sold for use in Operation Wild Rose. Unaware that two of the missiles he is lobbing at Washington DC contain QD Fawkes in already having second thoughts about the mission. With Pitt's help he will prevent the release of QD

Sparring PartnersSparring Partners by John Grisham
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I wish I could rate the individual stories instead of the entire book.

"Homecoming" would have gotten 4 stars. I enjoyed catching up with Jake Brigance and Harry Rex. Their client is Mack Stafford (I remembered him from a previous boo where he was mentioned) who wants to come home from his life on the run. Unfortunately a vindictive Father in law ruins his plans.

"Strawberry Moon" would have got 1 star, I didn't like it at all Cody didn't deserve to be executed for being part of a home invasion, as a young boy. He and his brother were just trying to find food and get money for shelter.

"Sparring Partners" would have gotten 3 stars. Diantha Bradshaw manages to steal the tobacco settlement from her law partners.

Shadow Fallen (Dream-Hunters, #6)

Shadow Fallen (Dream-Hunters, #6)Shadow Fallen by Sherrilyn Kenyon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This has a lot of my favorite characters in it, but I am having a bit of a problem fitting it into the timeline since Grim is still tied to Adarian and Nick hasn't been born I am putting it in the past. Also some of my favorite characters are still bad guys so...it's a bit confusing.

Ariel (daughter of Michael and an Arel) is cursed and is sent to earth in human form according to the curse "the man she loves will die in her arms". Valterie the Godless has been dreaming of Ariel and is a bit put out when the woman of his dreams shows up on his doorstep with no memory.
Belial (demon sent to fetch Ariel for Kadar (Thorn's Dad) and Azura (Shadow's Mom) once she is corrupted, soon shows up posing as Ariel's brother. Making Valterie believe he had taken Ariel's virginity Belial convinces him to wed his "sister". Ariel starts to remember what she really is and the curse. Thorne and Shadow show up and try to help her but they don't know of anyway to break the curse.

They do discover a small hitch in Belial's plot Valterie isn't the hapless human Belial assumed him to be he is the son of Jaden (Acheron's Uncle) and a demigod. Falling in love with Valterie she can't bear the thought of him dying so she tries to leave several times, but each time Valterie follows her and brings her back.

Grim (Kadar's son in law that was news to me I didn't know Grim was married) summons Belial to Azmodea and tells him to turn Ariel over to him. He has plans to give her to the Malachai and fulfill the prophesy, of the final Malachai being born of light and dark. But Belial can't bear that being Ariel's fate so he tells her what they have planned for her when she offers him her soul if he will let Valterie live.

While Valterie can be harmed he can't be harmed by conventional weapons so when the Saxon's attack he goes into battle thinking he will be safe. Shadow and Thorn go with him. Believing he has just gone to work on the wall Ariel soon follows with lunch and arrives in time to see him killed by a pitchfork to the heart. Unwilling to see Valterie die she kills herself regaining her Arel powers and forces his soul back into it's body

To Valterie's surprise Ariel's punishment is to return in human form to Valterie and have her life tied to his. (Not sure how Jaden pulled that off) They have a daughter Daciana and become friends with Acheron.

I wish she has stuck to one story instead of switching back and forth between the two, I found it very annoying.

Clara seemed a bit of an idiot as she was pining away on Ellis Island for a man she didn't really know. Although it was interesting how she paralleled the Shirtwaist Factory Fire with the Twin Towers. The stories didn't seem really connected

Taryn was grieving for her husband who died in the Twin Towers and dealing with her guilt in asking him to meet her at the Windows on The World and then being late which enable her to survive but cost her husband his life.

The Weaver's Legacy: A historical epic novel of the Irish in the American West

The Weaver's Legacy: A historical epic novel of the Irish in the American WestThe Weaver's Legacy: A historical epic novel of the Irish in the American West by Olive Collins
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I had high hopes for this book a I would like to read more Irish and Irish American History, unfortunately this book is extremely short on HISTORY. it's not so much a Historical Novel as a soap that is set in a certain period with very little details of the period provided.

Goldie's family (and her nickname was a major annoyance supposedly the Indians gave her, the nickname because of the color of her hair but then it's belabored several times that she had red hair???) immigrated to America and joined a wagon train headed to the Black Hills, lead by a cousin Aengus. Aengus had moved to the Black Hills several years early and had a prosperous farm, and Indian wife and step-son (Chaytan). Shortly after they arrive a plague of locust comes and Baby Miriam disappears, while in Goldie's care.

Chaytan comes to break horses for Barry (Goldie's Father) and Goldie befriends him, she also goes to Aengus' house where his wife Makawee teaches Goldie to weave. Before Aengus is killed he and Makawee have a daughter Winona. The rest of the family shuns the Indians and one day her brother Lorcan brands Chaytan. After that Chaytan refuses to break the horses and Barry forbids Goldie to go to Aengus' home. After Aengus is found dead, Lorcan goes to shoot buffalo and eventually joins the army to wipe out the Indians or force them onto reservations. Everyone knows that Lorcan and Timothy Breen had something to do with Aengus death, but nothing is done to them as it is believed that Aengus was arming the Indians. Goldie's sister Frances married Owen Breen

Irritatingly the book narrated from 1937 by Goldie's niece Lucy. Lucy is supposedly Lorcan's daughter and the book begins with Lorcan (who was presumed dead) coming back to town. Lucy and her husband Harry, return to Goldie's home to see if it's really Lorcan and what he wants and what claims he may have to Goldie's fortune which was left to Lucy. After meeting with Lorcan Harry wants to return home (5th Avenue New York), but Lucy wishes to stay in Four Oaks.

Book returned to library (Chapter 27 page 308)

The rest of the book was extremely boring and tedious and reads more like someones review of a book than an actual book as mostly it just recounts what happened, with no feelings or emotions I never connected with any of the characters.

The big reveal is that Lorcan lead the Breen's to Baby Miriam's home when Chaytan was there. Owen Breen was shot in the head (he didn't have a stroke as Frances told everyone.) Miriam and her husband were killed and Chaytan was taken an hanged. Before they hung him Chaytan told Lorcan that the woman in the cabin was Miriam and that her daughter was hidden inside the cabin. Lorcan returned for the girl (Lucy) and took her to the orphanage where Goldie later found and adopted her. Lorcan went to visit Makawee and she killed him. Lucy left Harry and married John Dwyer.

I am sorry I wasted my time reading this book and will not read another book written by her.
