Holy Ghost by John SandfordMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
When a sniper starts shooting people outside a church in Wheatfield, Minnesota Virgil Flowers is sent to investigate. The town was dying until the Virgin Mary appeared at the local Catholic Church. Now tourist are flocking to the church in hopes of seeing the Virgin for themselves, but with two of the tourist injured the Mayor (Holland) and his sidekick (Skinner) question how long the gravy train will continue.
Virgil is drifting around questioning people when he discovers that the owner of the local shooting range (Glen) has been killed and his dog locked up in the basement for around two weeks. Virgil rescues the dog and the couple he is staying with adopt it. It looks like the guy was sexually involved with someone and it also looks like his gun is missing and that it's likely the one being used in the shooting. But no one has a clue who Glen was seeing.
Then a local woman (Margery) is shot and the case starts coming together. At first Virgil suspects her son but after he is murdered Virgil realizes that it's the couple he owes money to that is responsible for the killings.
