Prince Dorian rescues Celaena Sardothien from the Salt Mines of Endovier after a year of slavery. He comes with a deal enter a contest to determine the King's Champion and after 4 years as the King's assassin, she will be freed.
Chaol Westfall, Captain of the Royal Guard has the unenviable task of watching over Celaena and training her, and their friendship blossoms, but Prince Dorian also wants a relationship with Celaena and their friendship causes a rift between Chaol and Dorian.
Something is killing the other Champions in a gruesome manner Celene finds a secret entrance in her chamber and stumbles on the tombs of Gavin, the first King of Adarlan, and Elena, the first Princess of Terrasen, Brannon's daughter and Gavin's wife and queen. And Gavin's sword Damaris, Celaena also speaks with Elena, who demands that she defeat the evil in the castle and become the King's Champion. Elena also gives her a coin-size gold amulet to wear as protection.
Celaena also becomes friends with a princess from Eyllwe Nehemia. It's Nehemia's knowledge of Wyrdmarks that saves Celaena's life during the final competition after Kaltain poisoned her at the King's bidding. (The King and Perrington disavowed all knowledge of the poisoning and had Kaltain hauled off to prison). Chaol also stood by her at the duel and after it was over and Celaena was declared the champion Chaol killed Cain when he tried to stab Celaena in the back.
The King lets Celaena know that if she ever fails to do his bidding or fails to return to the castle he will kill Chaol and Nehemia.
