Tenar is taken from her family as a young child to serve the Nameless Ones as the first priestess. As she becomes a young woman she is forced to offer sacrifices to the Nameless Ones. Her only relief from the boredom is to explore the labyrinth where only she is allowed. One day she discovers a wizard (Ged) in the tombs, looking for the Ring of Erreth-Akbe.
At first she imprisons him and says she is going to make him a slave of the Nameless Ones. But when she realizes the priestess Kossil intends to kill him she hides him away in the treasure room.
Realizing she is in danger from Kossil who suspects she lied about having Ged killed she goes to Ged and together they escape, with the Ring of Erreth-Akbe.
