Boston 1662, so many things can get you accused of witchcraft, and the noose is tightening around Mary's neck. When she tries to flee an abusive husband by divorcing him she sees first hand how the magistrates give more weight to the men's words than to any woman's. But being denied a divorce isn't the end of Mary's bad luck. If being forced to live with her abusive husband isn't bad enough, now someone is trying to frame her for witchcraft and even if she figures out who it's doubtful the magistrates who are eager to hang her will believe her.

I feel like their should have been more character development but I enjoyed reading about familiar places. Not sure anyone not familiar with the Mississippi Gulf Coast will enjoy it though. It felt really rushed and the characters never drew you in.

Overkill by Sandra Brown (Goodreads Author)

I really wanted Eban to go to jail for what he had done. Dying seemed way to easy and fast. And it didn't make any sense that Theo and Cal would go to Zach's house with a gun and hold Zack and Kate hostage when they wanted to confess.

Hostage (Paperback) by Robert Crais

HostageHostage by Robert Crais
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Fast paced adventure. Denis has just got out of the Ant Farm and decides to rob a convenience store and drags his younger brother Kevin along. I felt sorry for Kevin the poor guy was one of those people who are easily bullied into doing things. He also brings Mars along and this was a huge mistake as Mars isn't who Denis thinks he is. Unfortunately for Dennis the store owner is tired of being robbed and pulls a gun on the hooligans. Dennis fights him for the gun and the store owner is killed. Then their car breaks down as they are fleeing the scene and they break into a home in a gated community and take the Father and two children hostage.

The Father is an accountant for the mob and he has incriminating evidence in his possession. They kidnap Jeff Talley's family in an attempt to get the info back.

Jeff Talley isn't your usual small town sheriff. He is a former member of SWAT and a hostage negotiator. He'll use all his skills to get the children out of the house alive and rescue his own family while bringing the mob down.

The Winners (Beartown, #3) by Fredrik Backman (Goodreads Author)

The Winners (Beartown, #3)

The Winners by Fredrik Backman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I hate this book..I love this book..brilliantly written but oh so sad. A lot of my favorite characters are going to die in this book. Set 2 years after Us Against You The book begins with a storm and two deaths Ramona (the owner of the Bearskin aka Benji's at the end of the book.) dies of old age. And Ruth a girl we barely knew dies of an overdose far away and her parents have brought her home to bury. Unfortunately Ruth's brother (Matteo) blames hockey and hockey players for her death specifically Mumble (Beartown's goalie) and his former friend(Rodri). Matteo should have really blamed his Religious Fruitcake parents who called their daughter a liar and told the police she was making the rape allegations against Rodri up. Ruth ran away from home after that. Maya and Benji come home for Ramona's funeral. Zackell recruits a new hockey player Big City.

Meanwhile Tails has gotten Peter involved in a Ponzi scheme that is threatening to blow up with the newspaper editor investigating it. Peter is oblivious to all the trouble he is in, but Tails goes to Kira for help and she eventually tells Peter what is going on. In the end Tails will take the blame for everything.

Bobo falls for a girl (Tess) from Hed, Peter and Kira reconnect, and Matteo becomes angrier and angrier at Hockey players. He poisons Sune's dog Bang. I really hated that and I wish that they had investigated Bang's murder and put Matteo away for it. But other than the Pack and Sune no one seems to care. Although a fight does break out at the hockey ring when some of the Hed players start barking.

 Ruth writes in her diary

"That's how you teach boys that they have rights over us. Then we get bigger and then they rape us..." She continues, "Parents always think they have to talk to their daughters about guys. But you don't have to talk to us about guys because we already know all that, for f---'s sake, because we're the ones they rape!! Talk to your damn sons instead!!! Teach them to talk to each other and teach them to stop each other. Raise just one f---ing boy somewhere who can become a head teacher who understands that when boys pull girls by the hair, it's the f---ing boys there's something wrong with."

After the fight in the hockey ring Kira and Hannah (Tess's Mother and a midwife) lead a candlelight procession through the two towns and things seem to settle down until the next hockey match. Matteo sneaks into the Beartown locker room with a pistol and attempts to shoot Mumble. Alicia and Benji are in the locker room and Alicia is standing in front of Mumble asking questions so Benji does the only thing he can to save Alicia's life he flies into Matteo taking two bullets to the chest. Thankfully Ana's Father is at the game and has gone to make sure he locked his truck when he sees Matteo with the pistol. He isn't fast enough to stop him from shooting Benji, but he is able to shoot him before he can shoot anyone else. Lev and Ana help him get away before the authorities get there so no one will know he killed Matteo.

I actually think there may be another book about Alicia in the future.

A Truth to Lie for (Elena Standish, #4)

A Truth to Lie for (Elena Standish, #4)A Truth to Lie for by Anne Perry
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

A bit slow going in the beginning. Elena is sent into Germany to get a scientist (Hartwig) working in germ warfare out, another agent is sent to get his counterpart (Fassler) out. Not knowing how to get a car on her own and forbidden by Peter from contacting Roger Cordell (the cultural attache and M16) she reaches out to Jacob, who helped her escape Germany in Death in Focus.

Hartwig is shot to death during a car chase, and Elena and Jacob are tasked with helping get Fassler out as the agent sent to expedite his escape has been injured. Elena isn't anymore successful getting Fassler out than she was Hartwig he dies in a plane crash that Jacob and Elena miraculously escape from.

Lucas does a bit better on his mission to kill Paulus out of sheer luck. Hans (Roger Cordell's son in law) is sent by Paulus to pick Lucas up and Paulus orders him to kill Lucas. Hans has been unhappy with his superior officer for awhile and this assignment is the last straw he kills Paulus instead and takes Lucas to the airport. He then contacts Roger Cordell for help getting his wife Cecily and daughter Madeleine out of the country, and encourages Roger and Winifred Cordell to flee Germany too. Roger and Winifred stay behind but Hans and his family safely escape and Roger arranges for Hans to work in England.
