Onxy Storm Questions

This is sort of a follow up to the previous post who took the eggs and why? One theory was that someone took the eggs to Unnbriel in trade for their help with the war, but they demanded two of each kind so wouldn't that necessitate 12 missing eggs?

Another possibility is that the eggs were given to the Irids. Maybe not just for safe keeping. The Irids were horrified by how Andarna turned out, and have a low opinion of the other dragon breeds. Maybe Andarna suggested it was the fact she was raised in Navarre by the other dragons that lead to her willingness to use her magic for violence. And that if the hatchlings from the other breeds were raised by the Irid they would be more peaceful like them.

Did Andarna come back alone or was Leothan with her? Nothing suggest that Leothan was with her, but I have a suspicion that Andarna didn't just leave because she wanted to know her family but because she thought she could get them to help. In other words I think she always planned to come back.

If Xaden took the eggs which everyone seems to think happened that means Tairn, Andarna and Saeygl were involved, and killed their elders. The dragons obviously have to know what happened but they aren't telling their riders. My theory is that dragons challenge each other for leadership. Tairn/Andarna (and Saeygl) took control of the Empyrean by challenging the Elders that died and winning. (Andarna was already a member of the Empyrean as the only Irid) Therefore now Tairn (and Saeygl) decide what the Empyrean will and will not do. Tairn at one point told Violet he was willing to break the Empyrean's rules. Or did the Elders actually die? Is it possible that the Elders took the eggs to a secret hatching ground and disappeared and that telling the humans they died was a way to explain their absence. Whatever is going on Tairn and Andarna would know, but they aren't telling anyone even Violet.

As always the Dragons are the key.

Onyx Storm (The Empyrean, #3)

Onyx Storm (The Empyrean, #3)Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I hate writers that end books on cliff hangers especially whey they announce they are taking a break. If you feel the need to take a break from writing at least don't leave your readers hanging.

And really we haven't advanced much since Iron Flame

The book is consumed with Violet trying to find a cure for Xaden and Xaden trying not to use his venin powers. And I think this is an important point and if there is a path to Xaden's salvation it's probably this ...He never uses his powers unless he needs them to save the people he loves. Which makes it even sadder that at the end of the book he uses his powers to save Sgaeyl and turns fully venin. But and this is a big but...he apparently has a plan and Sgaeyl not only agrees to help him she gets Tairn to agree to allow him to see Violet and help with the plan if Violet agrees to it. Since Violet gets Imogen to wipe her memories we have no idea what happens after that other than Violet married Xaden and the head priestess of Dunne's temple gave her official blessing to the legal binding marriage. Tairn is "sleeping" and can't answer questions and Andarna isn't being her usual chatty self, although she does declare " I will not let them burn you". What we do know is that someone Xaden cares about turned venin and that 6 eggs are missing, four riders, their dragons and three elders were murdered in the valley and five riders were missing it's four now that Violet has returned.

Panchek was the traitor and Xaden allowed him to be ended by Berwyn. Since Berwyn is Xaden's Sage he can't kill him no matter how much he wants too but he does knock him unconscious.

I can't let Sgaeyl die. Can't leave him to stumble down the same path I did. Can't allow my friends to perish because I selfishly want to keep Violet by my side

If I understood the ending correctly Xaden killed all the wyvern in the pass.

As much as I don't want it to be I think Garric is probably the one who turned venin he is missing and the last time we saw him he was drained of power to the extent his couldn't use his second signet of distance wielder, and he wanted to find a way to help. If he channeled from the Earth he would have been able to reach Xaden. It can't be Bodhi because Imogen saw him throwing up, unless he is also a distance wielder, he never revealed to Violet what his second signet was. I really don't think it is Brennan as some fans have hypothesized as he would have no reason to turn. He was able to save Mira with Sloane and Dain's help. If he had been going to turn I think it would have been then in order to save Mira but by sending Sloan to Violet, Aaric (precog) sent them what they needed to save Mira's life. Aairic has been keeping his signet secret as it is one the authorities think of as dangerous.

Is Naolin Berwyn? A possibility maybe as he supposedly died "trying to" saving Brennan's life. The official story is that he died beside Brennan after draining himself. Maybe he turned venin to save Brennan. That would explain Tairn's attitude toward Xaden and his refusal to talk about Naolin.

Secondary to curing Xaden they were trying to find the Irids hoping they could help and Andarna wanted to meet her (den) family. The Irids turned out to be really judgy and disowned Andarna because she didn't turn out the way they wanted, as they value Peace over Warfare. When they refuse to help and disowned her Andarna's response is priceless.
"You preach peace while only having known its privilege", Andarna hisses in retort. "You are all a disappointment to me"

Leothan does show some interest in Andarna (he is more closely related to her than the others are) and when she disobeys Violet and protects Dunne's temple (like Aaric said to do) he intercedes to save her life by firing the wardstone at Aretia. He also offers Andarna a chance to learn their ways but she must severe her bond with Violet and go with him. Andarna chooses to leave with Leothan.

At the end of the book Andarna returns in time to help Violet defeat Theophanie and protect her when Violet is found in the courtyard.

Songs of the Humpback Whale Jodi Picoult

Songs of the Humpback WhaleSongs of the Humpback Whale by Jodi Picoult
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

This book was awful and I usually love her books. Flips between the past and present and told from multiple characters POV. Jane leaves her husband and starts an affair with a man young enough to be her son. The only reason Jane goes back to her husband is that her daughter's boyfriend who was old enough to be her father and the boy toy's best friend dies in a tragic accident when Jane refuses to allow them to be together.

Simi (Shadows of Fire, #3)Simi by Sherrilyn Kenyon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It's told from Simi's POV so the majority of the book is in "Simi talk". Points of interest Simi knew Nick was the Malachi when she slept with him. She apparently knows lots of things that she doesn't always share with Ash.

So didn't see the Thorn and Simi romance coming.

The Death Mask (Eve Duncan, #31)

The Death Mask (Eve Duncan, #31)The Death Mask by Iris Johansen
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I love Irish Johansen but this plot is tired, she really needs to branch out to new material and start leaving Eve at home. Same plot different book. Bad rich man wants to rule the world and he needs Celine (beautiful girl) and Eve to do it. Good rich man (Alex Dominic) comes to Celine's rescue and they join forces to bring the bad guy down. Eve refuses to work with the bad guy so he kidnaps her son. Eve then agrees to work with the bad guy and Joe and Alex Dominic join forces to bring the bad guys down and rescue Celine, Eve and Michael. And don't get me wrong I would have done whatever it took to save my son, but Eve seems to get kidnapped an awful lot or forced into working for bad guys to save someone she cares about.

I did enjoy the material concerning Folashade.

Lethal Prey (Lucas Davenport #35; Virgil Flowers #16)Lethal Prey by John Sandford
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book is a little different than usual as we know from the start who the killer is. Lucas & Virgil just have to catch up to what we know and the ending isn't satisfying as we don't know if the circumstantial evidence they are able to amass will lead to a conviction. I am actually surprised she is out on bail and enjoying life after burning Virgil's barn down.

Dawnshard (The Stormlight Archive, #3.5)Dawnshard by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed learning how Rysn became a holder of a Dawnshard, and learning more about Chiri-Chiri. So I now know where two Dawnshards are Rysn has one and Sigzil holds one until Wit returns to reclaim it Wind and Truth, and both are on Roshar so I am assuming Odium (Retribution) is going to be looking for them. I hope Brandon Sanderson doesn't make us wait to long for the next book in the series.

House of Fire and Magic by Sherrilyn Kenyon (Goodreads Author)

House of Fire and MagicHouse of Fire and Magic by Sherrilyn Kenyon
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I found it very reminiscent of Sarah J. Maas' series which I enjoyed immensely. This has a neat twist as it seems to be playing on the legend of Arthur when Dash rescues a young boy named Arthur and sends him to Ector with the request that Ector squire him. Dash's uncle is named Marthen and he holds great powers as does Dash's Mother Naomi (the fact Naomi is his Mother is a secret).

Tanis (dragon) captures the High King Dash (unicorn) and asked to be turned human so she can hunt down the human that killed her brother without killing the entire village. Dash is on a quest to find the human that killed his sister and took her golden horn (wand). They join forces and soon fall in love but they have to battle Meara to get Dash's crown and the golden wand back.

While I enjoyed the book there were a few plot holes. When Dash is dying they stated that only someone with a golden or black horn can use Renata's wand. But Ryper (Dash's brother) has a black horn but everyone seems to have forgotten that, when earlier in the book they made a big deal about him turning into an unicorn and leading people away from Dash (who was in human form), because everyone thought the unicorn was Dash. But not to fear Tanis crying all over Dash saves his life because "Dragon Tears".

Poor Tanis has lost her entire family because it wasn't a human that murdered her brother but her two older sisters who not only murdered her brother but murdered their Father after Tanis left.

Dash's family is complicated Renata was his half sister her (golden) horn is the only thing that can kill Dash. Ryper is his twin (not identical) brother but no one is supposed to know. Dash trust Tanis with the secret and later Ryper blurts it out when he is confronting Renata's killer, and Dash is dying. Naomi the Oni (demon) queen is their Mother. Marthen is Naomi's brother. Dash killed his Father and took the throne after he escaped from Meara (his father gave him to her as a hostage).

At the end of the book Dash's black horn is now gold and black.

I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

I wasn't surprised by the ending all the clues were in the first chapter. Probably the fact the sheriff was in love with the killer is what kept him from seeing the truth.

The Olympian Affair (The Cinder Spires, #2)

The Olympian Affair (The Cinder Spires, #2)The Olympian Affair by Jim Butcher
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I enjoyed it, but it didn't seem as good as the first. Maybe because there was such a long time between books I had forgotten some parts of The Aeronaut's Windlass. But I still love Rowl and Grimm and Fenli is a hoot, he is a brilliant addition to the series. The book jumped around a lot (one of the things I disliked about it) so I am just going to discuss the characters.

Colonel Renaldo Espira joins Captain Calliope Ransom(Grimm's wife) in mutinying against Madame Cavendish when he discovers Cavendish is controlling the mistmaw that is attacking poorly defended spires full of civilians. True to her nature Calliope betrays Espira and he and his surviving men are imprisoned including his warriorborn sergeant Ciriaco (really like him and hope we see more of him in futurebooks) But Cavendish doesn't trust Calliope and infects her with crystals in order to control her. Even then Calliope manages to get the keys to free Ciriaco from his chains to Espira. When Grimm attacks Calliope's ship Mistshark Espira and his men are able to break free and aid Grim, but the battle would have been lost if the crew of Stormmaiden (a Piker ship) hadn't come to the rescue led by their warriorborn captain Ravenna (Grimm's girlfriend).

Ferus gives his life to gain control of the mistmaw that is attacking Olympia and turn it against the Auroran Amada that has come to finish Spire Olympia off. (I will miss him). with his dying breath he entrust Folly to Grimm's care.

When Predator can not be separated from Mistshark Gwen chooses to stay on the ship in hopes of landing it on the surface in salvageable condition. Unable to walk she is forced to join forces with Cavendish who can not see to survive on the surface until they can be rescued.

Count Alexander Bayard (Grimm's friend) is forced into dueling the warriorborn Valesco when he slaps Abigal (Duchesses Hinton) in public. Bayard chooses Francis Madison Grimm (Grimm Ship-Trees) to be his second. Realizing that Bayard is unlikely to survive the duel and with no way to dispatch Valesco herself Abigal poisons Bayard in order to prevent him from dueling Valesco. As Bayard's second Grimm must duel Valesco in Bayard's place. Grimm knows he can't beat Valesco dueling but he determines to survive. He allows Valesco to grow overconfident and when Valesco goes to deliver the killing blow Grimm uses the opportunity to sever Valesco's head from his body. But his leg is severely injured in the duel and receives more injuries in the battle to protect Spire Olympia, Grimm may never walk again without a cane. When Bayard realizes what Abigal did he breaks up with her. Abigal chooses not to reveal to Bayard that she is pregnant.

Benedict (warriorborn) rescues a tribe of small cats from Spire Dependence after it is destroyed by a mistmaw and is named Tribesaver by the cats. Fenli is one of the cats that is rescued. Rowl deems Benedict worthy to mate with Bridget (Littlemouse) which is good since they get engaged on Spire Olympia during the mistmaw attack.

Big reveal Madame Cavendish was working for the Tyranima (the ancient enemy of the builders) Lord Albion (Longthinker) has been promised help by an Archangel.

Prince Rowl refers to Fenli and his tribe as halflings and they bicker through most of the book. But they do work together to save Bridget and seem to become fond of one another by the end of the book. Fenli seems to be a very wise cat and is adapt and managing Rowl.

Wind and Truth (The Stormlight Archive, #5)

Wind and Truth (The Stormlight Archive, #5)Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Several key reveals in this book.

I will start with Honor. Honor isn't dead but it's vessel Tanavast is. When Tanavast urged the Knights Radiant to reject their oaths (out of fear that they would misuse their powers and destroy Roshar) and betrayed Ba-Ado-Mishram (Unmade) who wanted peace between humans and singers and helped Odium lock her away Honor rejected him. The Storm Father has merged with Tanavast's Cognitive Shadow and reveals the truth of what happened to Dalinar. We also learn that if Honor and Odium ever fight each other directly it will destroy Roshar. Hence the need for champions. We also learn that Honor has constantly asked the other shard holders for help, but they have all refused since Odium is locked away on Roshar by the oath Honor made. So the other shard holders view Odium as Honor and Roshar's problem. The Stormfather has chosen Dalinar as his champion, but until right before the contest, Honor refuses to choose him as a vessel out of fear of being betrayed.

Hoid/Wit is immortal and a holder of a Dawnshard (commands of enormous power Wit holds Exist). He was one of the major figures in the Shattering of Adonalsium but avoided taking up a Shard himself, instead choosing to wander the cosmere pursuing his unknown goals, often in the guise of a fool or storyteller. And he is determined to destroy Odium. After Odium becomes Retribution Wit realizes he is likely to be killed so he gives his Dawnshard to Sigzil minutes before he is vaporized and pushes Sigzil into Shadesmar. Wit then rematerializes on Scadrial where he left a portion of his body behind so he could regenerate if his body was injured beyond his abilities to heal. He promised Sigzil to come retrieve the Dawnshard soon, but due to the information he learns after being regenerated on Scadrial chooses to abandon Sigzil and his promise to him trusting that Sigzil will keep the Dawnshard safe no matter what the cost is to him.

Sigzil was left in charge of defending the Shattered Plains. Realizing they couldn't hold the Shattered Plains he made a deal with Venli and her group of Singers. Before Sigzil could retreat with the rest of his army he was attacked by Moash. When Moash corners Vienta (Sigzil's spren) and attacks her with an anti-Stormlight weapon Sigzil renounces his Windrunner oaths, thus making Vienta a deadeye, but saving her life. Vienta refuses to see him when he is Shadesmar but sends word that she is healing. The book ends with Sigzil in Shadesmar.

Shallan is also trapped in Shadesmar when the book ends and she is pregnant. We also learn that her Mother is the Herald Chana.

The Wind (an old god of Roshar) chooses Kaladin as her champion to protect the spren. Kaladin's skill as a therapist grows during this book and is demonstrated with him first helping Szeth realize that he can choose peace if he wishes. Szeth has heard "a voice" since childhood. When he comes to believe that "the voice" is a Voidbringer and that the other Shin Honorbearers are corrupted by it he leads his monastery in a Civil War against them. Ultimately he is convinced he was wrong and accepts being made Truthless (sold into slavery). Now with Dalinar's blessing, Szeth is on a mission to free his homeland from "the Voice" and Kaladin is accompanying him. Ishar (the leader of the Heralds) is "the Voice" and has been corrupted by taking some of Odium's power from the Well of Control. Those who use the Well of Control can gain the powers of Odium. Ishar has been grooming Szeth to take Jezrien's place among the Heralds. Nale not realizing Ishar was corrupted has been following his instructions but he too begins to listen to Kaladin. Kaladin was trying to help Ishar overcome his insanity, and stop his plans with Szeth. Hoping that when Szeth swore his Fifth Ideal near him, Ishar would regain his sanity back due to the release of power on swearing, but it did not work as Ishar had placed protections against being healed by sworn Ideals after his brief return to sanity after Dalinar swore his ideals. Ishar than made Kaladin and everyone nearby including the spren feel the darkness of the Heralds to explain what he had been enduring for the others. Kaladin managed to stand and choose to try to protect Szeth from the darkness. Kaladin then managed to convince Ishar that he would feel better eventually and swore the Fifth Ideal of the Windrunners unexpectedly to Ishar, forcing the power of Odium out of Ishar.

Ishar remade the Oathpact in order to protect the spren from Retribution at the request of the Wind who had been pushing towards this. The Wind suggested that they create a place for their minds to go separate to their bodies, like the visions from the Stormfather. Kaladin chooses to replace Jezrien in the Oathpact and becomes a Herald.

Adolin loses a leg in his defense of Azimir but chooses to fight on. His plate while being worn by someone else is lost to Abidi (Fused). When the battle seems lost he agrees to help Yanagawn sneak into the throne room and hold it. But they walk into a trap set by Abidi. Abidi's desire to duel with Adolin gives them a chance to hold Azimir. When Adolin's plate leaves Abidi for Adolin he is able to win the duel and when Maya arrives with around fifty deadeyes, nine of them, together with Maya herself, form the Unoathed. The Unoathed (one of which is Yanagawn) are able to hold the throne room until the deadline arrives, ending the conflict officially, with Azimir, and by extension the entire country of Azir, safe. After Stormfall, Maya traveled to Urithiru through Shadesmar. As Radiants could no longer use their powers, and the Oathgates no longer functioned, this was the only way they had to reach Urithiru. She returned to report to Adolin and the other leaders at Azimir that Dalinar was dead and that Urithiru had been surrounded by “a strange glass bubble” that prevented people from traveling to or from it in the Physical Realm. She also relayed the fact that Radiants at Urithiru could still use their powers and that Ba-Ado-Mishram had been freed. Ba-Ado-Mishram is freedom is healing the Deadeyes.

Rlain and Renarin are now a couple and they are the ones responsible for freeing Ba-Ado-Mishram.

Taravangian didn't destroy his family like Cultivation thought but hid them and the residents of Kharbranth away in the Spiritual Realm in a replica of Kharbranth. Kharbranth in the Physical Realm is destroyed. (But this act proves Dalinar right to Taravangian's dismay). Taravangian thought he had come up with the perfect way to defeat Dalinar. Taravangian began to torture (young) Gavinor Kholin (Dalinar's step-grandson) in the Spiritual Realm when he was sucked into it by mischance. To groom him into the perfect champion for the upcoming contest Taravangian placed him in visions that ingrained in him a deep hatred of Dalinar Kholin, and a love for Taravangian himself, thus leaving Gavinor willing to become his champion and attempt to kill Dalinar in the contest of champions. Within the visions themselves, Gavinor experienced twenty years of this grooming, with only a few hours passing in the Physical Realm. Dalinar was faced with the choice to kill (the aged) Gavinor and save Roshar from Odium or forfeit the contest. Honor decided to take Dalinar as a vessel. This allowed Dalinar to see a third (brilliant way according to Wit) he realized Honor is childlike in his understanding of oaths and honor and needed time to understand so he bought them time. He renounced all Honors oaths including the one binding Odium to Roshar (thus making him the problem of the other shard holders again) and rejected Honor. Taravangian foolishly took Honor's powers (guaranteeing the other shards would hunt him). The combination of Honor and Odium has created Retribution. Retribution killed the Stormfather and Dalinar.

Navani is in a coma to protect the Sibling.
