Against the odds, Violet gets into flight school and is bonded to not one but two dragons Tairn (one of the largest and most powerful dragons) and Andarna (a child dragon but that's a secret everyone else thinks feather tails are just a different breed of dragon, they don't realize they are children). To further complicate matters she falls for Xaden Riorson whose father led the rebellion, and was killed as a traitor. The children of the traitors are forced to go to flight school and serve Navaree as dragon riders. Xaden's dragon Sgaeyl is Tairn's mate.
Because of her friendship with Dain Aetos Xaden didn't tell her everything, Xaden divulged one secret about an outpost he visited. Violet unwittingly revealed the secret when Dain read her memories without permission. The secret nearly cost Violet, Xaden, and all his friends their lives when a trap was set for them. Turns out venin and wyverns are real and the leadership of Navaree will kill anyone who learns the truth. Only Violet's ability to wield lightning and stop time saved most of them. Unfortunately, a wyvern killed Liam's dragon, leading to Liam's death. Violet was poisoned during the attack and Xaden chooses to take her to the one place where she might be saved, his home.
Aretia was supposedly burned to the ground but Xaden is rebuilding it. But the biggest secret Aretia holds is that the brother Violet thought was dead is alive and well and it's his healing abilities that save her life.
By the time Violet wakes up, Andarna has grown up so Violet will no longer be able to stop time.
