When Monk finds Zenia's body on Limehouse Pier he assumes she is a prostitute. The truth turns out to be much different and leads him to the ultra respectable Dr. Lambourn. Unfortunately Dr. Lambourn is dead a supposed suicide, but Runcorn had his doubts from the beginning and at Monk's urging reopens the case, even though those higher up would prefer for him not to.
Forced into arresting Dinah Lambourn for Zenia's murder Monk urges Rathbone to represent her and works with him to prove her innocence. But everything seems to be against them including the Judge who rules against Rathbone and stops him from presenting evidence that would prove Dinah's innocence every chance he gets. To prevent an innocent woman from hanging Rathbone will use his inheritance from Ballinger "the photographs" to induce the Judge to give Dinah a fair trial.
At a loss to discover the identity of the murderer, Rathbone takes a desperate gamble to discover the truth.
On a personal note Runcorn is married to Melisande "Ewart" a witness he and Monk had questioned years ago. Rathbone and Margaret are permanently separated.
