The Choice

The ChoiceThe Choice by Nicholas Sparks
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Really found it hard to like these characters. Gabby is a cheater. The first part of the book is all about Gabby cheating on her long time boyfriend Kevin with Travis and finally agonizing over her decision to break up with Kevin. Personally I can't stand Gabby, if you want to hook up with your hot next door neighbor fine, but break up with your boyfriend first.

The second part of the book Travis is agonizing over his decision to keep Gabby on life support even though she has a living will stating she doesn't want to be on life support long term. He feels guilty because he was driving them home after a concert and due to his reckless driving they were hit by another car.

This book would have been much better and more believable if Gabby hadn't recovered but amazingly she comes out of her coma.

The Bands of Mourning (Mistborn, #6)

The Bands of Mourning (Mistborn, #6)The Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The book begins with Wayne wrecking Steris and Wax's wedding by creating a flood. Shortly thereafter Wax is manipulated by the Faceless Immortals into helping find ReLuur's missing Blessing. looking for the Lord Ruler's Bands of Mourning, and investigating "The Suit's" experiments.

Wayne, MeLaan (one of the Faceless Immortals), Marasi, Steris, and Wax set out for New Seran. Where they discover The Suit is fomenting a rebellion. After one of the rebel leaders is murdered, and Wax is framed for the murder, the group has to leave town swiftly. They make the choice to follow the clue Marasi and Wayne uncovered about where The Suit and ReLuur's Blessing may be.

Once there they discover The Suit is in possession of a technologically advanced "ship" that crashed. Marasi releases Allik (He is one of the Malwish people who live far to the South past The Roughs. Supposedly The Lord Ruler came to them after Vin killed him and helped them survive the cold that Harmony brought to their land when he remade the World. Their myths tell of a temple that house the Bands of Mourning), who is one of the last survivors from the crash. The Suit has tortured the others to death trying to get answers. Wax "rescues" Telsin (his sister) and with Allik's help the group escapes in a small ship concealed in the larger ship.

They head to the temple and get there before The Suit does. The Suit ask to talk to Wax and Wax allows him to enter the temple. MeLaan was badly injured when she and Wax explored the temple setting off numerous booby traps. Wax is taken by surprise when Telsin shoots him and grievously injured falls into a pit. Together Telsin and The Suit overcome the rest. Telsin removes MeLaan's Blessing and she dissolves into goo. Wayne manages to escape but the others are taken prisoner. Telsin orders The Suit to go find Wax and make sure he is dead.

Wax figures out the real Bands of Mourning are hidden somewhere in the pit, but before he can reach them his Uncle (The Suit) confronts him. His Uncle triggers a cave in and takes the Bands of Mourning, but he can't get them to work. Crushed by the cave in Wax dies, a heartbroken Wayne takes his shotgun and goes after Telsin.

Marasi figures out that the piece of the statue that Wayne took and then left with her when he took ReLuur's Blessing is the real Bands of Mourning. She uses it to escape and save Wax. Wax overcomes all the bad guys and makes a treaty with the surviving Malwish. Wayne shot Telsin, but left her alive believing that Wax would want him too and she escapes. He did get the blessings back from her and MeLaan is restored. The Suit is taken to prison where he expects to be rescued by creatures with glowing red eyes, but unfortunately for him they have decided they longer need his help on this sphere and he is killed.

Wax has fallen in love with Steris and they are married in a private ceremony.

Warriors of the Storm (Saxon Stories, #9)

Warriors of the Storm (Saxon Stories, #9)Warriors of the Storm by Bernard Cornwell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OK, since Uhtred has the annoying habit of renaming his sons to keep them straight I am going to refer to his oldest son as "The Priest" and his youngest son as "The Warrior".

The book begins with the ships outside Brunanburh being burned by Ragnall Ivarson. Uhtred is relived that his son-in-law Sigtryggr isn't with his brother. Finan learns that his family is fighting with Ragnall. And everyone is happy to learn that Prince AEthelstan is OK.

Ragnall is hoping to take Ceaster but first he goes North and conquers Northumbria. When he returns to lay siege to Ceaster on Easter he has numerous Christians with him that he kills and Brida (a former lover of Uhtred's) gelds a priest that Uhtred realizes to his horror is his eldest son. Uhtred demands that the priest and nuns of Ceaster save his son's life, which they do. He also learns that his son "The Priest" was acting as an emissary for Sigtryggr and Stiorra who are under siege in Ireland by Ragnall's allies. Stiorra is holding them off by witchcraft but they are in danger of running out of food. He also learns that most of Ragnall's allies are with him under duress as he is holding their families hostage. Against AEthelflaed's wishes Uhtred leaves for Ireland to rescue his daughter.

Uhtred easily takes the boats guarding his daughter's stronghold and the crews give their allegiance to Uhtred and Sigtryggr, who promise to help rescue their family members from Ragnall. They land in Northumbria and gain an audience with Brida who is under the impression they are Ragnall's men, who have taken Stiorra hostage. Brida is killed and they set out to find Ragnall. Uhtred sends his son "The Warrior" to request aid from AEthelflaed's troops, who he assumes are close by.

Uhtred is disheartened when his son "The Warrior" returns and reveals that AEthelflaed returned to Ceaster leaving Cynlaef in charge of her troops and that he is too far away to be of help. Expecting to be defeated by Ragnall, whose army outnumbers his by thousands he tell Stiorra to run away with Sigtryggr, but she refuses. Finan challenges his brother who sends his champion against him. Finan quickly defeats the champion and taunts his brother who attacks him when his back is turned. Finan defeats him anyway and takes his crown. The Irish will no longer fight with Ragnall. Sigtryggr takes the women hostages he has and releases them. They go to their husbands who no longer wish to fight for Ragnall. Realizing they have a chance Uhtred leads a charge against the men who remain loyal to Ragnall, but a large majority of Ragnall's troops change to Uhtred and Sigtryggr's side giving them the victory.

Uhtred returns to Ceaster tells AEthelflaed he has made Sigtryggr King of Northumbria and that he will not attack Mercia and that with her "permission" he is going to reclaim his home.

Down the Rabbit Hole (In Death, #41.5)

Down the Rabbit Hole (In Death, #41.5)Down the Rabbit Hole by J.D. Robb
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cute short stories by some of my favorite authors.

Wonderment in Death by J.D. Robb - When Louise and Charles' friends are killed in an apparent murder suicide they ask Eve to look into the case and she discovers the Mad Hatter and his mad schemes.

Alice and the Earl in Wonderland - Alice and the Earl travel into the future.

I Love - A man discovers he needs to pay more attention to his girlfriend and less attention to his phone, when he is sucked into his phone. (Keeping with the Alice in Wonderland Theme I would have called it Through the Looking Glass)

A True Heart - A woman discovers she needs to give people a second chance if she wants to find happiness. (Keeping with the Alice in Wonderland Theme I would have called it 'Curiouser and Curiouser')

Fallen - A woman travels into the past to discover the man she loves. (Keeping with the Alice in Wonderland Theme I would have called it Late for an Important Date)
