The Golem of Hollywood (Detective Jacob Lev, #1)

The Golem of Hollywood (Detective Jacob Lev, #1)The Golem of Hollywood by Jonathan Kellerman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Rather tedious especially as it keeps alternating between the past (Biblical Adam and Eve) and the present and several mysteries.

Jacob Lev has been tasked by "Special Projects" with finding the killer whose calling card is the Hebrew word for Justice and a severed head. When the victim turns out to be one of the Creeper Killers he starts hunting down the Creeper's partners in crime. His inquires take him to Prague where he stumbles on his family's personal history with the MaHaRal and his connection with the Golem of Prague.

Haunted by the mysterious Mai he allows her to escape after she saves his life even though he realizes she is the killer he and "Special Projects" seeks.

Dismayed to find that his Mother isn't dead but locked away in a nursing home Jacob has more questions than answers at the end of the book.

Words are Suppose to Have Meanings

When words lose their meaning chaos issues. I blogged about it way back in 2006 when public school students were trying to co-opt the homeschool label.

Now the insidious mislabeling of things has crept into ranges. There are basically three type of ranges; slide in, drop in and free standing. This used to be the definition of a slide in.

A slide-in cooking range has contoured sides with a slightly-protruding cooktop, which allows the installer to slide it in between the cabinets, so that the cooktop actually rests on top of the countertop on each side. There must be cabinets on each side of this range model, since the side panels are not finished as found on a freestanding stove, but have alignment grooves.
Due to my kitchen layout I have to have a slide in range, there isn't a choice in the matter. So when Hubby offered to buy me a new range for Christmas I was thrilled when I found one I liked. Unfortunately stores don't seem to have any on display, or even in stock so you are forced into ordering them online from a picture. But from the picture the Slide-In Range with Large Capacity Oven and EvenJet™ Convection LSE3090ST Stainless Steel was just what I wanted, it has the knobs on the front of the range, which is what I want.We ordered it and it even came in before Christmas, Hubby offered to go ahead and install it as the burners on my current cooktop give me fits. Imagine our dismay when the range that is clearly labeled a Slide-In Range didn't have a protruding cooktop, like it was suppose to. This is a Free Standing Range, and should be labeled as such.

I guess I'll be keeping my old range a while longer until manufactures start making slide in ranges with the knobs on the front like I want.  Kuddos to Best Buy for taking it back and giving us a full refund.

Tell Me (Savannah #3)

Tell Me (Savannah #3)Tell Me by Lisa Jackson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I had trouble getting into it and it seemed to drag, the interviews interspersed throughout the book made the narrative confusing and hard to follow.

Blondell (what a stupid name) O'Henry was sent to prison for killing her daughter Amity and shooting her two younger children, on the testimony of her young son (Niall). Now Niall is saying that his testimony was coerced by the lead cop on the case who happened to be a former lover of Blondell's and Amity's biological Father.

Reed and his partner are tasked with finding evidence to prove Blondell's guilt, but Reed begins to suspect she isn't the killer.

Nikki is determined to turn Blondell's story into a true crime novel. Her "research" begins to uncover family secrets. Nikki first begins to question her families involvement with Blondell when she questions why Blondell and her children were staying at the cabin Nikki's family owned, she then begins to wonder who Fathered the baby Amity was carrying when she was killed. And both questions lead back to her Uncle.

When Nikki visits the cabin for the first time someone leaves a snake in her car and she and Reed are eager to discover who feels so threatened by the truth coming out that they would kill to stop it. When Nikki discovers that Effie has been following her she goes to confront her only to find Effie missing and tons of pictures of Nikki's family. Realizing that Effie is her Aunt Penelope's daughter that she put up for adoption she is nevertheless outraged to discover that Effie plans to steal Nikki's book. Seeing that Effie plans to meet Roland Camp at the cabin she follows Effie there. She finds Effie dead and Roland desperate to hide his involvement the night of Amity's death. Nikki manages to get away from Roland only to discover that he wasn't the killer............................

After visiting her Aunt Penelope in prison Reed and Nikki elope.

Born of Betrayal (The League, #8)

Born of Betrayal (The League, #10)Born of Betrayal by Sherrilyn Kenyon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

For anyone who has read the Dark Hunter Series I don't think it came as any surprise that Nykyrian eton Anatole's twin Prince Jullien eton Anatole has been turned into a hero. I sincerely hope the next book is his and that it comes out soon as he has been captured by his Grandmother, Queen Eriadne, who would have slaughtered the entire royal family, as well as their friends who were taking shelter in the palace if Jullien hadn't risked his life to save them. The book ends with Queen Eriadne still in control of Andaria.

Fain and Galene get off to a rough start after she shoots him the minute she catches sight of him. Their relationship is further complicated by the fact that Fain assumes Talyn is her hot young boyfriend. When he realizes Talyn is his son he is mortified by all the times he was not there for the woman he loves and their son. Turns out that Fain went stralen for Galene the first and only time they made love, he was afraid she would be punished if anyone realized they had sex before their unification ceremony so he was trying to hide the fact he was stralen for her. When Merrell eton Anatole threatened to kill Dancer and Keris if Fain didn't give Galene up, then lied to Galene about Fain sleeping with Omira, Fain didn't know what to do. Believing that if she hated him Galene could find happiness married to Merrell he didn't deny it when she confronted him about sleeping with Omira.

Since his family (except for Dancer) disowned him and he was banished from Andaria, he didn't know that Galene never married and that the Iron Hammer was her Bastard son. Fain took Omira with him as she was trying to get away from her abusive Father. Shortly after he caught Omira in bed with another man Fain was captured by slavers. Braxen Venik (Leader of the Porturnum Tavali) captured the ship he was on, their relationship started out as very abusive and Fain is his slave. Braxen Venik also claims that he can push a button and kill Fain at any time. He had Fain turned into a Rogue pirate (cyborg technology was implanted in Fain that allows him to become one with his ship. The Tavali will kill to keep this technology secret). Fain is horrified that he almost killed his son when he was flying against the Andarions. Talyn advises Fain never to tell Galene as she won't be able to forgive him for almost killing Talyn and costing him his leg.

Talyn becomes closer to Fain after Fain has Felicia brought to the station and gives Talyn "papers" claiming Talyn as his son. Talyn is now able to marry Felicia who is pregnant with his child. Galene welcomes Fain back into her bed, which saves his life as an assassin broke into the adjoining room where Talyn had been sleeping. Fain switched rooms with him when Felicia arrived to give the couple more privacy.

Several bombs are planted on the station one near Fain's adopted children's quarters, but Gavarian ezul Terronova (Felicia's nephew) got them to safety, before the bomb went off. Because he was near where the bomb was planted the Tavali are going to arrest him, but Fain is unable to allow the innocent young man to go to prison for a crime he didn't commit so reveals to all that he shot Talyn (Viper) and Gavarian down and that they have known it from the moment they saw his ship. Galene is furious with Talyn and Fain for not telling her earlier.

Another bomb almost kills Venik and Hermione Dane, but Fain is able to defuse it with Galene's help. She claims him as her husband while they are defusing the bomb, and Venik promises Fain his freedom as a unification present.

Fain finally discovers that the traitor on board the station is a jealous Malys Venik (Braxen's wife). Queen Eriadne told Malys that Talyn was Braxen's son and that Galene was his mistress, so she has been trying to kill Talyn, Braxen and Galene. She has assassins going after Talyn who has just been arrested on her orders. Fain rushes to save him but the bomb goes off trapping Fain and Talyn. Talyn begins to go into shock and realizing that the fastest way to get Talyn out and the help he needs involves crushing himself Fain insist on being allowed to sacrifice himself for his son. Talyn is freed and Fain is being crushed to death when Nero and Hadrian show up and use their combined telepathic powers to save him, but they aren't strong enough to hold the wall. Just when it looks like Fain will be crushed the mysterious and very powerful Trajen (Tavali High Admiral and Leader of the Gorturnum) shows up. We find out right away that Trajen is a Trisani who is even more powerful than Nero and Hadrian combined. He not only prevents the wall from crushing Fain he immediately heals Fain and Talyn. Nero immediately identifies him as his younger brother, who he thought was dead. Trajen is angry because when their planet (Trisa) was attacked Nero left the young Trajen with his Mother and sister (Julia) on an escape pod and went back to rescue his baby brother (Hadrian) and older brother (Augustan). Augustan was killed in front of him, but thanks to Augustan using his powers to teleport Hadrian to Nero and telling Nero to run, Hadrian and Nero survived. Trajen wasn't so lucky his uncle sold Trajen and Julia into slavery and their Mother was ruthlessly slaughtered in front of them, when she tried to save them.

When Braxen refuses to allow his wife to be punished Galen insist on relocating the Andarions. Julian's wife, Ushara of the Fyreblood Clan of Altaan ( Trajen's second in command) offers to give them refuge wth the Gorturnum. They arrive and are reunited with the family members who were in the palace but Julian isn't with them. They discover that he lead Eriadne's troops away so the others could escape and that not only did Cairistiona's troops refuse to help him they turned a badly injured Julian over to them in order to escape. To make matters worse "The League" has a thrill kill warrant on him.

Outrage (The Singular Menace, #2)

Outrage (The Singular Menace, #2)Outrage by John Sandford
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book picks up where Uncaged leaves off, it's beginning to be annoying how he ends the books on a cliff hanger. They seem unfinished........

Disgusted by Thorne's murder of West, Harmon joins the Remby Gang, and with Harmon's help they are able to get Cade back when he is captured by Singular. Cade was beaten so badly while he was being held by Singular that he is out of commission when they go to find the "experiments".

They also discover that the Vice-President of the United States is part of the "immortality project". The Vice-President is plotting to kill the President. If he is able to become President then Singular will be untouchable.

Fenfang (the young Asian girl they rescued when they rescued Odin, Singular attempted to download Senator Dash's brain into Fenfang's body) is killed when she spots her cousin and tries to get to him. They leave her body at a hospital hoping the authorities and media will be alerted to the experiments when they see the wires in her head. Odin had fallen in love with her and is taking her death badly.

Harmon and Shay are stuck hiding aboard the ship when it leaves harbor.

Saint Odd (Odd Thomas, #7)

Saint Odd (Odd Thomas, #7)Saint Odd by Dean Koontz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It seemed to drag, maybe because I dreaded Odd's death but the ending turned out to be a joyous reuniting of Odd and Stormy.

Odd returns home to foil the plot of the worshipers of Meridian. Hailing from Meridian MS I cracked up every time the demon Meridian and his cult was mentioned, which more than likely was not the authors intent. Dreaming of a flood, Odd almost missed the true plot of the cultist. At the last moment (as always) he figures out how they plan to destroy the town and foils them but this time the cost is his own life.

One minor point of annoyance at the end of the book Ozzie Boone refers to this as the eighth book.
Mystified, I took the stack already in the tray and found that in my hands I held his eighth and final manuscript.
So either the author made a mistake when writing the ending or there is an Odd Thomas book we have yet to read that took place before this one and was for some reason left out of the series.

How Unchristian - 'Jesus Is God; God is Satan'

Never mind that Allah is Arabic for God so what the Baptist Preacher's bigoted sign actually says is 'Jesus Is God; God is Satan'.

I wonder how Pastor, Chris Ashley and Gina Miller would feel if a sign outside a Muslim Mosque referred to Jesus as Satan? I am pretty sure they would be offended, heck they are part of the same group that is "offended" because Starbucks decided to use plain red cups for Christmas, they get their panties in a wad if you abbreviate Xmas, even though the X is Greek for Christ and most scholars agree that the first appearance of this abbreviation for Christmas dates to 1021. "

But no according to Gina and her uneducated ilk the X is a conspiracy to take Christ out of Christmas and never mind wishing them a Happy Holiday, that's so offensive to them you can already hear them gnashing their teeth as the Holiday season gets under way.

But for some reason Gina Miller and Pastor Ashly think it is perfectly OK to actually say something offensive about another religion all the while claiming they are doing it for good. Pastor Ashly needs to get the voice in his head looked into because I am pretty sure the God of the Bible wouldn't tell him to insult a large number of people by comparing their God to Satan.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (The Tales of Dunk and Egg, #1-3)

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (The Tales of Dunk and Egg, #1-3)A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George R.R. Martin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Beautifully illustrated and charming. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a compilation of 3 short stories about Dunk and Egg.

The Hedge Knight begins with Dunk burying his mentor Ser Arlan of Pennytree. Arlan's dying act was to knight Dunk, his clumsy seventeen year old squire. Poor Dunk doesn't have much going for him, while Ser Arlan was an "honorable" knight and taught Dunk honor the feeble old man wasn't known for his fighting skills. Dunk heads to Ashford Castle where he hopes to win a tourney. Along the way he meets a young boy (Egg) he mistakes for a stable lad. Egg follows him to Ashford Castle and takes on the duties of Dunk's squire and suggest that Dunk is short for Duncan, and Ser Duncan the Tall is born. Duncan has trouble getting anyone to remember him or Ser Arlan but at last Prince Baelor Breakspear (Egg's Uncle) vouches for him so he can ride in the tourney. But before the tourney takes place he has to get the shield he inherited from Ser Arlan painted with his own sigil (coat of arms). He takes it to a young girl he is interested in and leaves Egg to pick it up. When Prince Aerion (Egg's older brother) attacks the girl Egg runs to get Duncan, who beats Aerion up, but it's a crime to lay hands on a Dragon Prince and Duncan finds himself thrown in the dungeon. Looking at losing a hand and foot the unskilled Duncan chooses to challenge Aerion to trial by combat. The coward Aerion invokes his right to a trial of seven, hoping that the unknown Duncan will not be able to find six other knights to fight with him. Aerion's Father Prince Maekar (a famous warrior) along with the three members of the King's Guard they have with them will fight with Aerion.

Duncan is one warrior short when Prince Baelor joins them to make seven. It's a fight to the death and Duncan's group is comprised of Ser Humfrey Hardyng (who broke his leg when Aerion deliberately killed his horse), Robyn Rhysling and Humfrey Beesbury a young knight and a one-eyed old man, The Laughing Storm aka Ser Lyonel Baratheon (a great warrior) and Raymund of House Fossoway a young squire who demands to be knighted when his cousin switches sides and fights for Prince Aerion. (Raymund's branch will become the green apples henceforth). Because they are so outmatched with only two experienced warriors Prince Baelor chooses to use the longer tourney lances in hopes of unhorsing their opponents while keeping their own saddles. Duncan is eventually able to get his hands on the coward Aerion and Prince Aerion yields but Maekar Targaryen gives his brother Baelor a mortal wound before the fight ends.

Maekar banishes Aerion to the Free Cities and ask Duncan to take Egg (Aegon) as his squire.

In The Sworn Sword Dunk and Egg are serving Ser Eustace. When the Red Widow dams the stream Ser Eustace sends Duncan to treat with her. Duncan learns that Ser Eustace has been less than truthful with him, but he still does his best for the old man. In the end Ser Eustace weds the young widow to Duncan's dismay.

In The Mystery Knight Dunk and Egg stop off at a wedding tourney. But Egg quickly surmises it's a tourney of traitors. When "the Fiddler" (The Pretender aka Daemon) becomes interested in Dunk after "dreaming" of him a plot is hatched to have Dunk killed. Dunk survives the attack but loses his horse and armor. With no way to earn money to redeem them it looks like Duncan's days as a knight are over, but when Egg attempts to get them back for him by showing his signet ring (identifying himself as Prince Aegon Targaryen). His famiy's foes plan to hold him hostage but the quick thinking Egg claims that Prince Maekar sent him and Duncan there as spies and that Maekar will be arriving with his soldiers any moment. The craven Butterwell switches sides and helps Egg escape, after Duncan comes for him and defeats Black Tom. With Egg safely away Duncan works with the loyal hedge knights to free Ser Glendon Ball, the bastard son of a whore who the traitors planned to pin the theft of the egg on. Ser Glendon Ball then challenges The Pretender to a trial by combat and wins. The Bloodraven aka Lord Rivers (Egg's cousin and the King's Hand) arrives to put down the rebellion. He gives Duncan and Egg the money they need to pay Duncan's debts and let's the two go on their way.

I hope to see more Duncan and Egg stories after ASOIF is finished. *Note Aemon (Jon Stark's mentor) at the wall is Egg's brother.

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Kateryn Parr has to be the most boring woman who ever lived. Her cheif accomplishment seems to be managing to stay alive until Henry VIII died.

At first she spends her days as Queen in scholarship and writing but when Henry turns against her she gives up everything and becomes slavishly obedient to him in order to survive.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a scholarly work not written to entertain.

It's an interesting look at slavery in Manhattan, the fear of slave uprisings that gripped the city and the conspiracy that resulted in thirteen black men being burned at the stake, seventeen being hanged and more than one hundred black men and women being thrown into a dungeon beneath City Hall.

Saturn Run

Saturn RunSaturn Run by John Sandford
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Sanders Heacock Darlington aka Sandy saves the book from utter boredom. This isn't Sandford's usual genre and the multitude of characters and all the techno geek stuff makes this book extremely hard to get into.

Sandy who is extremely wealthy and who appears to be a lazy beach bum working at Caltech Astrophysics Working Group due to "Daddy" buying him a position discovers a space ship visiting Saturn. His video skills as well as his military background earn him a spot on the Space Ship Richard Nixon, when it goes to investigate.

They race to get there before the Chinese but one mishap after another cuts it close. Getting there a few weeks before the Chinese they discover that Saturn is a refueling and trade station for other species. They trade for technological blueprints and get as much info as possible before leaving.

The Chines try to steal one of the small space craft orbiting Saturn and in the process blow it up. They are immediate thrown off the Trade Station without the chance to make repairs to their ship. They pursue the Nixon and ask for their assistance, but after they are taken aboard they take over the ship. Their demands the United States turn over all the alien technology they were able to amass. When they start killing people to get the technology Sandy destroys it.

The United State President makes a deal with the Chinese and the Nixon is scuttled in space and a story about an alien plague is fabricated to explain the deaths.

But Sandy's shit eating grin says he has a secret get out of jail card.

The Aeronaut's Windlass (The Cinder Spires, #1)

The Aeronaut's Windlass (The Cinder Spires, #1)The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fast paced and full of lovable characters, my favorite is Rowl. Rowl is a cat with a high opinion of himself but considering he single pawed saved Spire Albion (OK maybe he had a little help from the humans) from the Auroran attack it's well deserved. Some of the smarter humans are able to speak cat and if the cats respect the humans they are bestowed names by the cats such as Rowl's person Littlemouse (a rather large human woman) known as Bridget by the humans. Bridget was very happy working in her Father's vattery and was not thrilled to join the Guard. But she quickly made friends with the Warriorborn (Rowl refers to him as a half-soul) Benedict and his cousin Gwendolyn. When Reggie is giving Bridget a hard time Gwendolyn (who comes from a very important family) steps in and makes things worse. Bridget winds up challenged to a dual by Reggie. Benedict comes to the rescue and starts to teach Bridget how to fight, and Rowl insist on acting as Bridget's second. Reggie objects to having a cat as a second in a dual, but is quickly informed that Rowl is a full citizen of the Spire and as such can be the second. Before the dual can take place Spire Albion, Habble Morning is attacked by the Aurorans.

Captain Grimm is in port having repairs made to his ship Predator when the attack takes place. Grimm and his crew quickly come to the assistance of the Lancaster Vattery and after helping to repeal an attack on the Vattery rush to rescue Gwen, Benedict and Bridget after Rowl comes for help.

Lord Albion gives Francis Madison Grimm (Grimm Ship-Trees) the crystals he needs to repair Predator in exchange for Grimm taking Gwen, Benedict, Bridget, Rowl, Folly and Ferus to Habble Landing. Folly and Ferus are ethrealists and have some rather interesting foibles Ferus can't manage doorknobs and Folly doesn't speak directly to anyone, but speaks to the jar of crystals she carries around. They also have some rather interesting "powers".

No sooner do they dock at Habble Landing than the Olympian ship Mistshark captained by Grimm's wife Calliope Ransom docks. Calliope tries unsuccessfully to get Grimm to leave.

Gwen, Benedict, Bridget, Rowl, Folly and Ferus go to seek lodging in Habble Landing. After being attacked by footpads they visit the Temple of the Way where Benedict was a student. His teacher Brother Vincent tells them of an Inn where they should be safe and after Brother Vincent shows them the library they go to the Inn. Bridget, Folly and Rowl go to get information from the local cats. Clan Chief Naun of the Nine Claws received them in a chamber with his entire clan including the kittens revealing to Rowl, that the clan was under attack by something that frightened them. Naun instructed them to leave a certain way and Rowl realized he wanted them to see something. When they are attacked by millions of baby spiders Rowl realizes it was their nest Naun wanted them to see. Before they can be killed by the spiders Folly uses her jar of crystals to burn them up. They are on their way back to the Inn when they are captured by the Aurorans. Meanwhile at the Inn Gwyn, Benedict and Ferus are attacked by a large adult spider. The spider kills numerous people inside the inn before Gwyn is able to kill it, but she receives an injury to her head in the process. When Grimm hears of the trouble at the Inn he rushes to help and an unconscious Gwyn is carried back to the ship.

The enemy ethrealists Madame Cavendish visits the ship and demands Ferus' trunks in exchange for the lives of Folly and Bridget. The trunks are turned over to Madame Cavendish and Ferus is unable to function without them. Rowl sends Mirl (one of his Father's spies) to tell Grimm where Bridget and Folly are being held and he goes to conquer the Nine Claws in order to lead them against the spiders and the Aurorans. Grimm leads a force against the Aurorans and Spiders but they are losing until the cats arrive to take care of the spiders. After rescuing Folly and Bridget they rush to the Temple of the Way after Bridget tells them of the Aurorans plans for it. The Temple of the Way is already burning when they arrive. Benedict and Bridget rush into the Temple when Rowl alerts them to the fact someone is alive inside. They find Brother Vincent trapped under a large book case. Benedict lifts it off him but he dies shortly afterward but before he does he entrust a book to Benedict. Benedict collapse from all the spider venom in his bloodstream and Bridget carries him out with Rowl's help.

Gwyn awakes back at the ship and helps Journeyman put the crystals in. They barely finish in time to avoid an attack on the docks by Mistshark.

Grimm and the survivors arrive back at the docks and are overjoyed when they realize Predator survived. Folly is able to locate Mistshark since Madame Cavendish took Ferus' trunks aboard. Folly is also able to talk directly to Predator. They quickly overtake Mistshark and gain the upper-hand in the battle that ensues. Calliope surrenders but while Grimm is busy with the Mistshark's surrender The Auroran Battle Ship Itasca is spotted. Grimm releases Calliope and prepares to flee. He risk everything to lead the Itasca into a trap but when the Glorious commanded by Commodore Rook takes heavy fire, Rook flees leaving Predator to face certain death. Grimm is trying to decided rather to fight to the death or surrender when he hears his friend Commodore Bayard's ship Valiant. He pulls off several risky maneuvers in order to blind Itasca to Valiant's approach.

Itasca battles, the Valiant, Victorious, Thunderous and Predator. They all take heavy damage and Itasca eventually surrenders to Grimm. The crew of the Itasca helps save the survivors of Thunderous. Grimm gives the book Brother Vincent gave Benedict and the book Madame Cavendish took from the Temple to Lord Albion.

Folly has a nightmare of the future...................

Not sure why the people don't live on the surface of the planet but instead live in Spires built above the planets surface. Also not sure how many Spires there are.

When Jenny's body is found in the woods Nalchek is determined to find her killer, and keep the dark secrets surrounding her death hidden. He sends Jenny's skull to Eve for reconstruction in order to learn the identity of the 9 year old child who was killed at least 8 years ago.

Eve soon learns this reconstruction will be different from the others when Jenny starts talking to her. The reconstruction proceeds with amazing speed and with very detailed results right down to the green eye color, thanks to Jenny's input. Eve is soon sending the skull back to Nalchek by FedEx, but no sooner does the FedEx driver pick up the skull then he is shot and killed and Eve is lured from her cabin long enough for her computer to be stolen and all her notes on the skull taken.

Eve ask Jenny to keep her killer from destroying the skull if she can and heads to California with Joe to try to track down the skull. She calls Margaret and ask for her help. Margaret learns that a coyote had been guarding the grave and that Nalchek as well as the killer and "the Other" had been visiting the woods around the grave. Margaret and Nalchek develop a "relationship" in spite of their mutual distrust of each other.

Joe is wounded when he and Eve retrieve the skull from Walsh. Elena sees the picture of Jenny in the paper and realizes that Cara is in danger. She sends Cara to hide in the cave and tries to lure Walsh away. Walsh captures Elena and tortures her until she reveals where Cara is. Walsh leaves Elena for dead and goes after Cara.

Eve finds a dying Elena and she tells Eve where Cara is and that she told Walsh. Eve, Margaret and Nalchek head for Spider Nest Cave to rescue Cara. Joe shows up in time to save Cara's life.

Eve and Joe plan to "adopt" Cara whose name will be changed to protect her. And Eve discovers she is pregnant.

Go Set a Watchman

Go Set a WatchmanGo Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jean Louise (Scout) discovers her Father is human and not the god like figure she idolized.

"........you confused your Father with God. You never saw him as a man with a man's heart and a man's failings."

Really don't understand all the people who are complaining that this book blackens Atticus Finch's name, as his brother (Uncle Jack) points out Atticus Fitch is the same man, the man who lives by the law.

"...The law is what he lives by. He'll do his best to prevent someone from beating up somebody else, then he'll turn around and try to stop no less than the Federal Government --- just like you, child. You turned and tackled no less than your own tin god -- but remember this, he'll always do it by the letter and by the spirit of the law. That's the way he lives."

I just wish it hadn't taken so long for this book to be published. It's a shame that Harper Lee is only a two book author as she writes so well.

The Murderer's Daughter

The Murderer's DaughterThe Murderer's Daughter by Jonathan Kellerman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Grace seems unbelievable. We first meet her as the child of two white trash parents who neglect her until she is five, when Grace's Mother kills her Father, than herself. Grace then winds up in the foster system where she is moved from home to home until winding up at Ramona's Ranch. The recurring them is "HOW SMART GRACE IS" this point is going to be hammered into us over and over again.

Fast forward to the adult Grace who is a successful therapist who engages in random sex with strangers. Her latest sexcapade with a man who calls himself Roger backfires on her when he winds up at Grace's office the next day as her new patient Arthur. Due to embarrassment and moral quandaries Arthur leaves her office without revealing why he came to see her. Shortly thereafter Arthur is murdered and the only clue the police have is Grace's office card hidden in Arthur's shoe. When questioned Grace lies to the police, to keep her sexcapade with Roger/Arthur a secret. But whoever killed Arthur/Typhon plans to take Grace out too. Grace lays a trap and kills one of the hired thugs who comes after her and hides his body. An old newspaper clipping provides Grace with the clue that Arthur was one of three mysterious children (Samael Coyote Roi, Typhon Dagon Roi and Lilith Lamia Roi) she meet when staying at Ramona's Ranch.

Then we flash back to her childhood where the oldest of the three children (Samael) unhooked the oxygen from one of the children under Ramona's care leading to the child's death and Ramona dying from a heart attack. Luckily for Grace she was then taking in by Ramona's brother in law, Max and his wife Sophie who eventually adopted her. More about how smart Grace is, and her success in academia and then professionally. With the reoccurring theme that Grace is smarter than everyone else.

Since Grace was conveniently planning to go on vacation after her appointment with Arthur, she uses her free time to track down Samael/Roger/Dion and kill him, and his remaining henchman.

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

OK, I am totally bummed that two horses got turned into petfood and no one did anything to stop it.

Milo is bummed because the murder of Katherine Hennepin is unsolved. The murder is set up to look like a romantic tryst gone bad, but the ex-boyfriend has an iron clad alibi. He was out of town with numerous people willing to vouch for his whereabouts.

When a wealthy divorcee is murdered in the parking garage adjacent to her lawyer's office the two cases couldn't appear more different, until someone sets up a romantic meal for two in the victim's home.

Chasing down one improbable lead after the other things don't start to gel until after Alex finds the tattoo parlor where the majority of victims got inked and the owner describes the man who accompanied them. Racing to find Jens before he kills again, Milo and Alex arrive in time for a dramatic take down before Jens can claim another victim. Unfortunately it looks like his accomplice will walk.

Dragonbane (Hellchaser, #7; Dark Hunter #24)Dragonbane by Sherrilyn Kenyon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It's great!!!!!

Max has been reunited with his brother Illarion who is adjusting to life in modern day New Orleans. Aimee is running Sanctuary (which has it's license back) and life is going pretty smoothly for Maxis until his wife and her Amazonian tribe show up. They are there to capture Maxis and turn him over to Kessar. Seraphina (Max's mate) doesn't reveal his presence to her tribe after they invade Sanctuary looking for him, but stays behind and reveals to Max that he has a son and daughter (Hadyn and Edena) and that Kessar will kill them if they don't turn Max over to him.

Max's friends plan to help him rescue his children even after he reveals that he is the Dragonbane (supposedly responsible for the war between the Arcadians and Katagaria. Max and Illarion were captured by Dagon and used to save King Lycaon's Apollite sons (Eumon and Linus) from Apollo's curse by creating the Were-Hunters. Hadyn and Edena are able to get away from Kessar but are captured by Dare (Fang, Fury and Vane's brother), Max goes alone and rescues them. The family is reunited and Max recovers from his wounds, before the demands for Maxis to be turned over the the Omegrion Council for sentencing have Savitar issuing a summons. Everyone at Sanctuary vows to stand behind Maxis. Savitar has little patience with those who want to judge Maxis and chooses to reveal what really happened. King Lycaon ordered that all the Were-Hunters except for his sons be killed, Eumon released the caged Were_Hunters but Linus who was angry that he had been joined with a wolf instead of a dragon sided with his Father and wanted to have them all killed. Maxis and Illarion were trying to protect themselves and the other Were-Hunters, Illarion attacked Linus, Eumon and Maxis were trying to break them up when they stumbled and Eumon was accidentally stabbed. With his dying breath Eumon asked Maxis and Illarion to safe guard his wife and removed the collar that was preventing Max from shape-shifting. Maxis took dragon form and carried Illarion (who was still trapped in human form) and Helena (Eumon's pregnant wife) to the beach where he summoned Savitar and asked for his protection for the Were-Hunters. Savitar granted his protection and prevented King Lycaon from killing the Were-Hunters that were still alive. The council not only side with Maxis many of them acknowledge the debt of gratitude they owe him. Illarion is made Regis as he was the one made from Prince Eumon's blood. (I thought this was a good thing, but...............future events will make this problematic)

Thorn and Cadegan show up barely alive and reveal Apollo escaped from Apollymi and is attacking Olympus. Everyone divides into groups with Savitar taking a group to Apollymi's realm to make sure she is OK. (Seems like Savitar and Apollymi have some sort of relationship which I hope is explored more in future books). The others join the fight in Olympus or return to Sanctuary to protect those there. Maxis and Illarion are together when Illarion hears the song his late wife Edilyn liked being sung by Apollo. Apollo claims that if Illarion fights for him he will be reunited with Edilyn. Illarion joins Apollo and Maxis is stabbed in the heart. He makes it back to Sanctuary but there is nothing Carson can do to save him.

Falcyn breaks his oath and uses dark magic to bring Maxis back to life and stays with Maxis to help Maxis knock some sense into Illarion. (Falcyn also seems to like Tisiphone, so maybe he sticks around a little bit to romance her.)

Never Die Alone (New Orleans, #8)

Never Die Alone (New Orleans, #8)Never Die Alone by Lisa Jackson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

There are too many sub plots, which I found irritating as it delayed finding out what had happened to Zoe and Chloe.

The first sub plot is Father John has come back leading Bentz to go on a drinking spree. Olivia is also urging him to give up police work.

The second sub plot revolves around the death of Brianna's twin Arianna, and Jase's part in it. Arianna had been sneaking out at night to meet Jase, the local rebel without a cause. One night he was late meeting her and she was raped. Jase attacked the rapist and thought he killed him (he still has the knife scare from the fight) he begged Arianna to go to the cops, but she refused, and begged him not to tell anyone. Jase took Arianna home, then asked his Father (Ed) to go with him to the cops, but Ed refused and told him that he and Jase's older brother (Prescott) would bury the body. When in truth the rapist was a friend of Ed's who had merely been knocked unconscious and who left town to avoid rape charges. Shortly after the rape Arianna drown. Jase has felt guilty about her death ever since. Jase also discovers that he has a twin brother he didn't know about. I really feel this revelation should have been left until after Zoe's rescue not before.

The third sub-plot revolves around Milo, a man from Brianna's Twinless Twin group. Milo has been following Brianna around. Milo tells Brianna he thinks she is in danger because he saw her with Jacob (it was actually Jase he saw her with) and reveals that Jacob killed his sister Myra on their 21st birthday.

Chloe and Zoe are kidnapped shortly before their 21st birthday. The twins find themselves naked and tied up in a basement with a nutcase singing "The Birthday Song" in his birthday suit plus an apron. Zoe manages to free herself while Chloe's whining distracts the killer. Zoe attacks him and both girls escape. Unfortunately while the killer was badly injured he soon regained consciousness and went after them. While trying to lead him away from Chloe, Zoe falls in the river. Chloe takes his truck but soon runs into a gate, the killer finds her at the gate and takes her back to the basement while he goes to look for Zoe. Chloe manages to catch him off guard and escapes a second time but is quickly recaptured. Zoe is almost caught but she manages to get to the road and flag down help before he can shoot her. When she goes to the police station she goes berserk when she sees Jase and identifies him as her attacker. But once she calms down she realizes he isn't the same guy Jase then reveals he has an identical twin (Jacob) he just found out about. They go to the shack the girls were being held at where they find Jacob dead and Chloe close to death.
