In Other Worlds - Fire and Ice

In Other Worlds (Were-Hunter #1; Dark-Hunter; The League, Gen 2 #2)In Other Worlds by Sherrilyn Kenyon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My favorite was Fire and Ice a badly injured Adron (Nykyrian and Kiara's son) is angry with his brother Jayce for not following the assassins oath and killing him when he found him barely alive. Now he lives in constant pain that he tries to dull by drinking. Livia is fixing to be married off to a man old enough to be her grandfather and there is only one way to stop it, the old goat won't marry her if she isn't a virgin. So she goes to the bar where Adron is hanging out with the sole purpose of losing her virginity. When her Father's guards show up she dives into the booth where Adron is attempting to drink himself into oblivion. She winds up going home with him and she uses her Trisani abilities to temporarily take his pain away and they make love. When her irate Father shows up to beat her and humiliate her Adron stands up to him and claims Livia as his wife, but shortly after that he collapses. Adron tries to get Livia to divorce him as he does not want her stuck with a cripple but she refuses to go and they fall in love. Livia manages to get Adron to go out in the world more and enjoy as much of the world as he can but when they run into Jayce things take a fatal turn when the two get in a physical fight. Adron is dying and there is nothing they can do to save him when Livia uses her powers to completely heal him. But the cost is steep,  Livia is in a coma and the doctors don't expect her to come out of it. Adron attempts to bring her Mother to her in hopes of saving her.

Knightly Dreams and Dragonswan are the other short stories in the book. Dragonswan is a Were-Hunter book and I have read it before.

The Kingmaker's Daughter

The Kingmaker's Daughter (The Cousins' War #4)The Kingmaker's Daughter by Philippa Gregory
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is told from Anne Neville's point of view. When her Father puts Edward (York) on the throne he is dismayed by Edward's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville and his allegiance to her Rivers' family. He plots with Edward's brother George (second in line) to put George on the throne. George is married to Anne's sister Isabel. When things go wrong they are all forced to flee and Isabel loses her child at sea.

But the Kingmaker doesn't give up. He has another daughter and another chance at the throne. Anne is married off to Edward Price of Wales the son of King Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou (Lancaster). They return to England to claim the throne but George betrays them and goes back to his brother's side. When Price Edward falls in battle Edward of York has King Henry VI who is his prisoner in the tower put to death. Richard (Edward's faithful brother) sends the widowed Anne (Princess of Wales) to live with Isabel and George. When he realizes they are keeping her prisoner he schemes to marry her and claim half the Neville fortune. Anne and Richard marry and have one son whom they name Edward.

When Isabel dies mysteriously George claims the Queen had her poisoned. Eventually he is arrested and tried for treason. They kill him by drowning him in a butt of Malmsey wine.

When Edward begins to show signs of favoring Richard over the Rivers',  Queen Elizabeth has him poisoned in order to put her son on the throne. Richard who was named Regent takes her son into custody and puts him in the tower until his coronation, but the 12 year old makes it plain he sides with his Mother and her family. At some point his brother joins him in the tower. Richard reveals that Edward was not really married to Elizabeth Woodville as he was already married to Lady Eleanor Butler and has their children declared bastards. Richard is crowned King Richard III and Ann becomes Queen of England,  and their son Edward is named Prince of Wales thus fulfilling her Father's dream.

Elizabeth Woodville schemes to overthrow the King. She has her eldest daughter Elizabeth of York betrothed to Henry Tudor. The boys in the tower disappear and are believed dead. Elizabeth believes the Tudor's are responsible and has Elizabeth of York seduce Richard.

Ann is in mourning for her son who died of fever shortly after Richard was made King. She goes along with Richard's supposed scheme to seduce Elizabeth so her betrothal to Henry Tudor will be dismissed. Ann becomes ill and suspects Elizabeth of poisoning her. Ann eventually dies.

Apparently Christianity is incompatible with a free society

Apparently Christianity  is incompatible with a free society at least as preached and practiced by Gina Miller (Islam is incompatible with a free society) and those Fundamentalist Extremist like her. As usual Gina's rantings and ravings are full of nonsense and half truths. But the loony who is always screaming about The U.S. Constitution is now supporting a foreigner who wants to ignore it.

Reason: Here in the United States, you'd advocate the abolition of –

Hirsi Ali: All Muslim schools. Close them down. Yeah, that sounds absolutist. I think 10 years ago things were different, but now the jihadi genie is out of the bottle. I've been saying this in Australia and in the U.K. and so on, and I get exactly the same arguments: The Constitution doesn't allow it. But we need to ask where these constitutions came from to start with – what's the history of Article 23 in the Netherlands, for instance? There were no Muslim schools when the constitution was written. There were no jihadists. They had no idea.

Reason: Do you believe that the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights – documents from more than 200 [years] ago – ought to change?

Hirsi Ali: They're not infallible. These Western constitutions are products of the Enlightenment. They're products of reason, and reason dictates that you can only progress when you can analyze the circumstances and act accordingly. So now that we live under different conditions, the threat is different. Constitutions can be adapted, and they are, sometimes. The American Constitution has been amended a number of times.

I wonder how OK Ms. Miller would be with Hirsi Ali's position if she wanted to close down all Christian Schools in the United States?  Luckily our Constitution protects the rights of Americans to practice the religion of their choice including the Muslim Religion.

Ali apparently is pretty ignorant of history. Islam has been around for many many years and indeed did exist when the United States Constitution came into being. In fact one of the first treaties the fledgling nation signed was with the Muslim Nation of Tripoli.

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. ~ U.S. Treaty with Tripoli 1796-1797

So Ms. Miller is actively supporting someone who wants to strip Americans of their right to practice the religion of their choice. Someone who wants us to change out Constitution to suit her radical agenda. I wonder what other rights Ms. Miller and Hirsi Ali would strip Americans of?

A Wanted Man

A Wanted Man (Jack Reacher, #17)A Wanted Man by Lee Child
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Possibly the first Reacher novel where he didn't score with one of the women in the book.

Reacher never learns he is still hitchhiking and the people who pick him up still bring him nothing but grief. When he is picked up on the side of the road by two men and one woman dressed in identical shirts he thinks nothing of hopping in the car. A few roadblocks later and after being asked to drive he is revising his opinion especially when the woman attempts to blink out a message to him. When they stop for gas Reacher attempts to call the FBI but before he can get through to the person he needs to talk to one of the men come in the gas station. When they later stop at a motel McQueen goes inside with him and takes a shot at him. Dutifully reporting back to his partner King that Reacher is dead with a bullet between the eyes.

Reacher finally gets to make his phone call to the FBI and Sorenson arrives. She plans to arrest Reacher but he talks her into looking for Karen Delfuenso, the kidnapped victim first. When they find the stolen car on fire with a body inside Sorenson assumes it is Karen's body and she takes Reacher into custody. But before she delivers him they discover Karen's daughter has been kidnapped. Sorenson and Reacher hide out while they wait to hear from Sorenson's forensics team. When they do Reacher's suspicions are confirmed it was a man's body inside the car, probably King and he has Sorenson turn him over to the authorities. He is taken to a hotel where the eyewitness, Karen and her daughter are all being held. Sorenson winds up there too after she ask one to many questions. It turns out that Karen isn't simply a cocktail waitress that got carjacked she works for the FBI. When they learn McQueen is in danger the 3 set off to rescue him and as usual Reacher accomplishes the impossible and rescues McQueen.

Chasing Fire

Chasing FireChasing Fire by Nora Roberts
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Really not up to her usual standards.

Enjoyed the secondary romance between Iron Man Lucas and Ella more then anything as it was more believable and extremely sweet. Divorcee Ella is given sky diving lessons and falls head over heels in love with the instructor/owner Lucas.

The main plot was unbelievable. Not only does Rowan do a man's job as a smokejumper and I really don't see how a woman would have the physical stamina to handle the job, she is supposedly the hottest thing around and has all her male coworkers lusting after her. But she has a iron clad rule not to sleep with her coworkers until Gull comes along. So in between fighting fires the two engage in sex every chance they get.

To further complicate matters last season one of the smokejumpers (Jim) who happened to be partnered with Rowan the day it happened landed in the fire and burned to death. His crazy "girlfriend" (Dolly) blamed Rowan for his death, now vindictive as ever Dolly poured pigs blood over everything in Rowan's room which resulted in Dolly being fired. When the teams equipment is destroyed everyone assumes Dolly did it. Then Dolly is found dead, her Father (Leo) goes nuts and threatens Rowan. When someone takes shots at her with Leo's rifle and latter kills the pastor that was sleeping with Dolly the police arrest Leo. Out on bail he flees making himself look even more suspicious. Equipment continues to be sabotaged and lives put at risk until Jim's brother Matt is revealed to be the killer and saboteur.

The Tenth Circle

The Tenth CircleThe Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Extremely chilling and very sad, but very well written.

Jason Underhill's life is ruined and eventually taken when Trixie Stone claims he raped her. When Jason breaks up with Trixie she is determined to get her former boyfriend back no matter what. She and her best friend Zephyr come up with a plan to make Jason jealous by Trixie coming on to every guy at the party Zephyr throws when her parents are out of town. Not really comfortable hooking up and giving blow jobs to every dick at the party Trixie goes to buy pot from Seth. Seth is out of pot and desperate to get rid of the kid at his door before Laura Stone (Trixie's Mother and his lover) gets out of the bathroom so he gives her Ketamine (a date rape drug). The plan seems to be working when Jason throws a punch at his best friend Moss when he takes a picture of her without a bra and refuses to erase it. Feeling sick Trixie rushes to the bathroom and Jason sticks around to check up on her when Zephyr and Moss go upstairs. Trixie kisses him and comes on to him and they wind up having sex. Then Trixie goes home and tells her Father (Daniel Stone) that she was raped. Daniel attempts to call Laura who is supposedly working late but is unable to get in touch with her.

Daniel takes Trixie to the hospital and the police are contacted. The town chooses to stand behind the High School Hockey Hero and Trixie is labeled a Slut and a Liar. When the picture Moss took surfaces Trixie attempts suicide. Laura finds her in time and she is taken to the hospital. Daniel kidnaps Jason and tortures him, afraid that no one will believe him Jason doesn't tell anyone. With her lies unraveling Trixie claims that she made stuff up because she couldn't remember things and she was afraid no one would believe her. Her blood is tested for drugs and Ketamine is found in her blood stream. Because of the Ketamine the charges against Jason are upgraded and he will be tried as a adult instead of a minor. He loses his scholarship and the town turns against him. Jason starts drinking and when he sees Trixie at a local grocery store slipping on ice. He stops her from falling and begs her to "tell the truth". Daniel seeing Jason with his daughter beats him up, when Jason runs off Daniel realizes that Trixie has disappeared. He calls Laura and they search for Trixie.

The next day they learn that Jason committed suicide. Eventually evidence comes to light showing Jason was pushed off the bridge, the police think Trixie did it and she runs away to Alaska, where her Father grew up. Trixie becomes romantically involved with Willie, before her parents arrive. When the police find Trixie and her parents in Alaska Laura reveals that she pushed Jason off the bridge after he confronted her about her daughter ruining his life.

This book is tragic on so many levels. Jason didn't really do anything wrong. He broke up with Trixie because he didn't want a serious relationship, he was honest with her. He really cared for her and according to him "the best part of being with Trixie was knowing she would have wanted to be with him even if he wasn't popular". Trixie refused to believe that she could find someone else and deliberately ruined Jason's life because he didn't want to be her boyfriend.

Was Trixie raped? She never told him "No" and at first she was into making out with him, it wasn't until he said that being friends with benefits was what he wanted that she changed her mind and because of the Ketamine in her system she was unable to say No. The Ketamine Trixie bought, and that Jason had no knowledge of.

Words of Radiance (The Stormlight Archive #2)

Words of Radiance (The Stormlight Archive, #2)Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jasnah and Shallan are headed to the Shattered Plains when the boat they are on is attacked. Shallan is able to save herself with the help of the Santhid, but believes that Jasnah is dead. She stumbles into the camp of some slavers and demands they take her to the Shattered Plains. She uses the engagement Jasnah arranged for her with Adolin to convince them it will be worth their while. When the slavers are trapped between two bands of bandits Shallan convinces the smaller band (deserters from Sadeas army) to join her by promising to get them pardoned. Shallan's group of slavers and bandits join with the larger merchant caravan and successfully fight off the larger band of bandits. Shallan becomes friends with the conwoman Tyn (who works for The Ghostbloods), who doesn't believe Shallan is really Shallan, but assumes she is a fortune hunter trying to trap Adolin. When they encounter Kaladin's patrol Tyn has Shallan con him out of his boots. Tyn has a spanreed and one of her communications that Shallan sees shows that Tyn was behind the assassination of Jasnah. Tyn realizes that Shallan is indeed really Shallan and attempts to kill her but Shallan manages to kill Tyn and has her bandits kill Tyn's remaining men. When they reach the Shattered Plains Shallan fabricates a relationship with High-Prince Sebarial (Uncle Sebarial) in order not to be beholden to the Kholin's as well as to have time to investigate The Ghostbloods, and search for Urithiru. Adolin is enchanted with Shallan which may lead to problems in the future. While Shallan likes Adolin and finds him handsome, she is very attracted to Kaladin and both men are besotted with her. I really hope Shallan doesn't mess up the friendship that is developing between Adolin and Kaladin.

Adolin thinks there is something off about Kaladin, but in spite of that learns to trust him and they begin to develop a friendship. Kaladin is head of the bodyguards (comprised mainly of members of Bridge 4) for Dalinar, King Elhokar, and their families. A strategy to weaken the other High Princes by Adolin dueling their Shardbearers and wining their Shardplates and Shardblades is developed, with the eventual goal of forcing Sadeas into a duel. Although the Shardbearers are hesitant to fight Adolin. This eventually leads to Adolin putting himself in grave danger when he winds up dueling 4 Shardbearers at one time.....

Meanwhile Kaladin is having trouble dealing with the fact Dalinar considers Brightlord Amaram a friend. Syl (Kaladin's spren) encourages him to tell Dalinar about Amaram's betrayal. Kaladin does and Dalinar promises to look into it. Kaladin is hurt that Dalinar didn't take his word for it. An attempt is made on King Elhokar's life. Kaladin figures out Moash is behind it. Moash reveals that King Elhokar had his Grandparents sent to prison where they died because Brightlord Roshone didn't like the fact their silversmith shop was doing better then his. Kaladin makes him promise not to assassinate King Elhokar but agrees to meet with Moash's new friends, ostensibly to uncover the conspirators............

Adolin is being severely beaten in the dueling ring and his four opponents will not allow him to surrender as they want to punish him. Dalinar begs someone to help his son. Renarin goes to his brother's aid (even though he is a terrible fighter) with only a Shardblade, he didn't have time to put on his plate. And Kaladin jumps into the ring with only his staff. Together the three manage to win the duel. When King Elhokar offers Adolin a boon and he demands the chance to fight Sadeas immediately (as planned), Kaladin sees a chance to get even with Amaram and demands the chance to duel him. King Elhokar is outraged that a dark eyes (Kaladin) would challenge a High Prince and allows Sadeas to weasel out of the duel. King Elhokar has Kaladin seized, and wants to have him executed but Dalinar intercedes and Kaladin is thrown in prison instead. When he is released he discovers that Adolin insisted that he be imprisoned too and that Adolin believes his allegations against Amaram. But still angry over his imprisonment Kaladin agrees with Moash that Elhokar needs to be removed and promises not to interfere with the assassination plot. Syl states this is dishonorable and against his oath. Kaladin realizes he can no long breath in stormlight. While they are on a scouting mission Kaladin recognizes one of Sadeas men, and realizes he is fixing to pull a lever that will send the bridge Dalinar is on plummeting into a chasm. Without stormlight Kaladin is unable to get to Dalinar in time to save him. Luckily Adolin is able to save his Father but Shallan, Kaladin and many others plummet to their deaths in the chasm. Syl gave Kaladin enough stormlight to save him but it caused her to die and Shallan (with the help of her spren Pattern) was able to save herself. Kaladin discovers that Shallan is a Surgebinder when she manifest a Shardblade for him to use to fight a Chasmfiend. His leg is badly wounded in the fight but he kills the Chasmfiend and Shallan uses the blade to carve a shelter for them to ride a highstorm out. They arrive back in camp in time for Shallan to give Dalinar the maps she made and tell him about Urithiru and the Oathgates. Before the war party leaves Dalinar comforts Amaram in front of Kaladin, and promises to deal with Amaram when he returns. Shallan goes with the war party to attack the Parshendi who have bonded with evil spren and become the Voidbringers who plan to call up the Everstorm. Shin (the Parshendi from Bridge 4) surrenders himself to Dalinar reveals his name is Rlain and that he was spying for the Parshendi but that they no longer exist and begs Dalinar to kill the evil Voidbringers before they can call up the Everstorm.

Kaladin is stuck back at the Shattered Plains with his broke leg. A drunken King Elhokar comes to apologize to him and to beg him to teach him how to be a King. He reveals he was jealous of Kaladin for behaving like a hero when he came to Adolin and Renarin's aid. After he leaves Kaladin realizes that he was wrong to agree to the King's assassination and sets out to stop it. Kaladin manages to kill the two fake guards and finds King Elhokar passed out drunk he manages to rouse him enough for them to flee but Graves and Moash both in Shardplate and with Shardblades follow them and attack. Kaladin is seriously wounded and they are fixing to kill him when Syl defies the Stormfather and bonds with him after he says the words making him a Knight Radiant. Graves and Moash flee but before they do Graves reveals that the assassin in white is attacking Dalinar (Moash was unaware of that part of the plot). Kaladin leaves the King somewhere safe and flies to Dalinar's aid.

Shallan found the Oathgate and plans are being made for the army to flee to Urithiru when Adolin spots the assassin. He is seriously injured when he tries to stop him from killing Dalinar. Dalinar manages to defend himself but is eventually thrown into the air. Kaladin intercepts him and makes sure he gets safely back to the ground and then fights Szeth who is shocked to realize that Kaladin is a Knight Radiant (this means Szeth wasn't Truthless and didn't have to kill all the people he was ordered to kill). Kaladin manages to kill Szeth but Nin revives him and plans to train him as a Skybreaker (one of the orders of the Knights Radiant). Kaladin retrieves Szeth's honorblade which Syl reveals will give anyone the ability to be a Windrunner (I am betting they will eventually give it to Adolin).

Dalinar orders everyone to come to Urithiru, surprisingly Sadeas obeys. But when he is alone with Adolin he reveals his plans to discredit Dalinar by claiming Dalinar plotted with the Parshendi. Adolin murders Sadeas.

Dalinar bonds with the Stormfather and becomes a Bondsmith. Renarin reveals he is  Truthwatcher one of the Knight Radiants (his spren is Glys) he sees.

Jasnah arrives in the middle of nowhere to be meet by Wit who reveals that Shallan has taken care of things in Jasnah's absence.

I am almost certain that 1.) Kaladin did not kill Shallan's brother (Helaran) and 2.) that Helaran is still alive and is ROCK. After all if you were on the run and needed money would you cart around very noticeable and identifiable Shardplate or would you sell it to someone else? Remember according to Amaram the face of the Shardbearer was destroyed beyond recognition.  Also the fact that Wit took an interest in Helaran leads me to believe he will have an important role to play.

Monty becomes obsessed with cleansing the "bad girls" so they can be "good girls" and stay home, in the hiding place he created for them. Dislike the fact that Monty's emotional problems were blamed on his being homeschooled.

Night of the Hunter

Night of the Hunter (Companions Codex, #1; Legend of Drizzt, #25)Night of the Hunter by R.A. Salvatore
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Love it!!!!! Reminiscent of the early Drizzt books.

Drizzt has been reunited with the Companions of the Hall and they set out for Gauntlgrym in order to capture Pwent. They hope to take him to a wizard so he can be resurrected and freed of vampirism although considering his age and wounds they expect him to die soon after being resurrected.

Unbeknownst to Drizzt and the Companions Tiago Baenre is still obsessed with killing Drizzt. He attacks Effron, Ambergris, Afafrenfere, Artemis and Dahlia believing that Drizzt is with them. Ambergris, Afafrenfere, Artemis and Dahlia are captured. Afafrenfere appears dead in his cage and Artemis is forced to watch while Dahlia is tortured with Effron's "death". Gromph Baenre instructs the drow to keep Dahlia alive and uses the illithid Methil El-Viddenvelp to erase her memories as Dahlia and turn her into Matron Do'Urden.

Tiago and a large force of drow attack Clan Battlehammer in the mines of Icewind Dale. Clan Battlehammer takes heavy losses and has to abandon the mine, but they also inflict heavy losses on the drow including killing Jearth Xorlarrin.

When Drizzt and the Companions confront Pwent he tells them that Ambergris and Artemis are prisoners of the drow. Drizzt, Bruenor, Catie-Brie and Regis go deeper into Gauntlgrym to rescue them.

When it looks as if Drizzt will be over powered by drow Artemis enters the fray and the companions win the day. But they believe Dahlia was killed by a cave in. Artemis stays behind and kills Berellip Xorlarrin in retaliation.

Ambergris and Afafrenfere leave Drizzt's party and head to the Monastery of the Yellow Rose.

Everyone still believes Effron is dead.

Drizzt, Bruenor, Catie-Brie and Regis are headed to Longsaddle with the captured vampire Pwent.
