The Companions

The Companions (The Sundering, #1; Legend of Drizzt, #24)The Companions by R.A. Salvatore
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It was a little slow at times.

This book takes place at the same time as The Last Threshold. Bruenor, Catti-Brie, Regis and Wulfgar are offered a chance to be reborn by Miielikki and reunited with Drizzt at Kelvin's Cairn after 21 years.

Catti-Brie (Ruqiah) is born into a Desai family who go to great lengths to protect her from the Shadovar. She is eventually captured and tutored by Lady Avelyere. When Lady Avelyere uses magic to discover Catti-Brie's secret Catti-Brie flees. She winds up with the Harpells for a time living as Delly Curtie. She eventually makes her way to Icewind Dale and is reunited with Regis.

Regis' (aka Spider) "Mother" dies in childbirth and his "Father" is a drunkard, who uses Regis' ability to dive to amass money selling oysters. Regis' abilities garner Grandfather Pericolo Topolino's (Grandfather of Assassins), attention. Grandfather trains Regis as a chemist, thief and diplomat and Regis has a romantic relationship with Donnola Pericolo. Grandfather Topolino's obsession with lich Ebonsoul's shipwreck leads to his death and forces Regis to flee the lich who is pursing him. He meets up with Catti-Brie in Icewind Dale.

Bruenor is born as Reginald Roundshield in Citadel Felbarr. Feeling that he has betrayed his beliefs he spends his childhood sullen and angry at Moradin and the other Gods. His fighting abilities are well above those of the other children his age and he is eventually sent to train with older children who he easily defeats. His disrespect toward his "Mother" and blasphemy of Moradin has King Emerus Warcrown placing him with the city guards. When they are on a scouting mission they are attacked by Orcs and Bruenor's bravery saves everyone. Presented with a medal and a wish Bruenor ask to go to Mithral Hall where Bruenor comes to believe that he made the wrong choice signing the Treaty of Garumn's Gorge with King Obould Many-arrows. Bruenor gets it into his head that he has been brought back to right this wrong by Moradin and that he should break his oath to Miielikki, he heads to Gauntlgrym to get his armor and plans to return as KING. At Gauntlgrym he is attacked by vampire drow and would have been killed except vampire Thibbledorf Pwent saves him. Pwent reminds him of loyalty, friendship, and honor and Bruenor realizes he needs to honor his oath to Miielikki, he is then allowed to sit on the throne. He gets to Icewind Dale in time to see and overhear Effron, Afafrenfere, and Ambergris who are looking for Drizzt. Bruenor decides not to approach them when he sees Guenhwyvar and Drizzt's tracks. He follows them and arrives just in time to see Drizzt collapsing into Catti-Brie's arms. Miielikki heals Drizzt and the friends reunite and to their surprise Wulfgar who Regis, Catti-Brie and Bruenor believed refused Miielikki's gift joins them.

The Affair

The Affair (Jack Reacher, #16)The Affair by Lee Child
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This should actually be the first book in the series. I really wish authors wouldn't write books out of order.

Reacher is still in the Military and he is ordered by Garber to go undercover to Charter Crossing, Mississippi where three women have been murdered. His opposite Munro will be on the military base (Kelham) but both have orders to protect the military's reputation.

The sheriff ex-Marine (MP) Elizabeth Deveraux immediately realizes that Reacher is working undercover. Once she establishes she can trust him they start working together and get romantically involved.

Munro shuts the base down, but denies that a quarantine squad is surrounding the base after a journalist from Oxford is killed in the vicinity of Kelham. When Bruce (the teenage brother of one of the black victims) is killed Reacher goes after the squad and discovers that the killers are self appointed soldiers known as the Tennessee Free Citizens, he takes out the killer and sends the others packing.

He also discovers that the white victim Janice Chapman (Audrey Shaw) was living in Charter Crossing under an assumed name and that she had an affair with Senator Riley before disappearing to Charter Crossing. All three victims dated Captain Reed Riley (Senator Riley's son) and broke up with him shortly before their deaths. The two black victims were pregnant at the time they were killed. Reacher goes to Washington D.C. to confront Colonel John James Frazer Senate Liaison about the cover up and Frazer meets with an unfortunate accident.

Reacher is confronted with evidence indicating that Elizabeth Deveraux is the killer, but suspecting her file has been tampered with he ask his friends for help clearing her name. Once he gets confirmation that the real killer is Reed Riley, Reacher orchestrates a solution to protect the army while seeing that the Riley's get the punishment they deserve.

Advised that he is on the army's shit list he makes plans to leave the army.

Religious freedom isn’t a license to discriminate

Religious freedom isn’t a license to discriminate and no state laws promoting discrimination on any grounds should be advanced.

Shouldn’t we have more pressing issues to worry about like unemployment, lack of health insurance for many citizens of our State, and our State’s constant ranking last in education? Sadly our State lawmakers backed by the Tea Party would rather advance “religious laws” infringing on others rights and promoting discrimination then actually work on the problems our State faces.

Contrary to what Miller and those like her believe, Science has shown that sexual preferences have a biological basis and are indeed an immutable characteristic like skin color. DNA studies have identified the general location of at least one "gay gene." there is also evidence that the brains of homosexuals may be different from those of heterosexual men and women.

As for Miller’s assertion that religious freedom bills aren’t about bigotry but merely to prevent bakers from having to bake “homosexual wedding cakes”, I would like to know since the Bible plainly states DIVORCE is wrong, why all these Christian bakers who are outraged at the idea of having to bake a cake for a homosexual wedding have never shown any OUTRAGE over having to bake "wedding cakes" for second, third etc. Marriages? And why these Christian Bakers aren't up in arms about baking baby shower cakes for unwed Mothers?
