The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Iris Chase is dying of a heart condition. Estranged from her granddaughter she feels the need to impart the secret of her daughter's birth to her. So she leaves behind the story of how she fell in love with a penniless author (Alex Thomas) and how he died in the war. How Richard, her husband, blackmailed her sister Laura into having sex with him and imprisoned her in a mental institution that performed abortions in order to keep his actions secret. And how after Laura's suicide Iris wrote a book (everyone believed Laura wrote it) denouncing Richard and ending his hopes for a political career, and leading to his suicide. How Richard's sister used her money to take Iris' daughter, Aimee from her. And how she also took her Granddaughter Sabrina from her, after Aimee's death.
