Blood Rights

Blood Rights (House of Comarré, #1)Blood Rights by Kristen Painter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Love the characters in this series, which is set in the future.

Chrysabelle is determined to escape from her life as a comarre, but when her patron is found dead Chrysabelle is the chief suspect and Tatiana's determination to get the "ring of sorrows" and become the most powerful vampire has Chrysabelle running to Mal for protection.

Mal is a noble outcast with great powers since he killed his sire, but the voices of the people he killed are driving him crazy. Fiona a young student he killed when she stumbled upon him chained in a dungeon haunts him as a ghost who can sometimes take corporeal form. When Mal is suffering from hunger she chooses to take corporeal form and provide him with blood. This leads to her needing a transfusion and when they use Chrysablle's blood she returns to life. Before this Mal had brought her a hurt tomcat in hopes of cheering her up. The tomcat turned out to be a cursed shape shifter, Doc falls in love with Fi and the three are a close knit group.

Tatiana kidnaps Chrysabelle's "aunt" Marissa, in order to trap Chrysabelle. After gaining the help of Dominic (Marissa's lover and another outcast vampire) they storm Tatiana's fortress. Mal is temporarily taken off guard when he recognizes Tatiana as his wife (Shayna) who he believed to be dead. Marissa and Fi are killed, the covenant that protects humans from vampires is broken and Tatiana flees after her lover Mikkel is killed. Once back in Florida Mal and Chrysabelle go their separate ways but she still sends him blood and she is determined to help him break the curse Mikkel and Tatiana placed on him.

Neverwinter (Book II)

Neverwinter (Forgotten Realms: Neverwinter, #2; Legend of Drizzt, #21)Neverwinter by R.A. Salvatore
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am still finding the books a bit melancholy as so many of Drizzt's friends are dead. Drizzt and Dahlia team up with Artemis (Barrabus) to kill Sylora Salm. Artemis who is controlled by Claw (possessed by Herzgo Alegni) hopes that Drizzt and Dahlia will kill Alegni for him. He is vastly relived by Dahlia's reaction to Alegni's name. Realizing his presence would allow Alegni to "know" what the pair are up to Artemis leaves his new allies. Alegni's new sidekick Effron was spying on Artemis and has revealed the fact that he was working with Drizzt and Dahlia. I believe that Effron is the baby Dahlia conceived when she was raped by Alegni and that she believes she threw to his death.

What Happens When You Stand Up to Bullies

What happens when you stand up to bullies? apparently they go bat shit crazy and develop a persecution complex.

Having laws protecting people from discrimination isn't persecuting you. Allowing homosexuals to marry in no way persecutes the minority of Christians who disagree with it. Thankfully the majority of Americans are sick of the hatred and vitriol spewed by Gina Miller, Westboro Baptist Church and others of their ilk. No longer will they be given free reign to impose their religious dogma on others.

One can only wonder what the Feedom of Speech Nazies at the American Clarion found to object to in this comment.

First our nation was not founded on a Christian World View what tripe. Most of the Founding Fathers were products of the ENLIGHTENMENT and that is what governed the founding of America.
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
http://www.stephenjaygould.org...

Now that we have that pesky myth you and Gina like to spread out of the way.

Successful Business Owners don't practice discrimination and realize their customers private lives are none of their business.

We have laws that everyone must follow. That isn't discrimination as the laws apply equally to everyone.
Hopefully it will make it's way out of moderation soon.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Kerasote's love for Pukka and Merle shine through. He offers some thought provoking information. I have to admit that I was disappointed he choose to go to a breeder for Pukka rather then adopt from a shelter. According to Nathan Winograd "17 million people are looking for new animals each year If just 20% adopted from shelters we could zero out the killing". Poverty determines how many healthy pets are KILLED. The United States ranks 27th out of 31 developed nations when it comes to overall poverty. Europe does a much better job of insuring a decent standard of living for it's citizens and thus KILLS for fewer healthy pets.

Cold BloodedCold Blooded by Lisa Jackson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OK, I have read this one out of order so I kinda knew some of the stuff that was going to happen. It was nice to read about how Bentz and Olivia got together.

Olivia has "visions" of women being ruthless murdered. She goes to the cops and a very skeptical Bentz slowly starts to believe her. Olivia also seeks advice from a priest, Father James, unaware that he is Bentz's half brother and their very troubled history. She is sexually attracted to both men and they to her, but her heart belongs to Bentz, even though he is determined NOT to get involved with her.

Olivia begins to unravel the dark secrets in her family and discovers that she has an older brother she never knew about. Bentz believes the older brother is the killer but they have no clue as to his identity. When Olivia sees him abduct Bentz's daughter, Kristie, Bentz comes unglued. Determined to find his daughter before it is to late he shuts Olivia out. When Olivia receives a frantic phone call from her friend Sarah who is in the middle of a messy divorce she doesn't hesitate to meet her at St. Luke's. Realizing to late that Sarah is under the control of the killer Olivia is abducted, but Father James sees the abduction. Father James trails the killer and calls 911 begging the dispatcher to tell Rick Bentz what he saw and that he is following the killer who has Olivia, when his cell phone goes dead (why don't these people ever keep their phones charged?). Thankfully a suspicious and jealous Bentz had bugged Father James' car and phone so he is able to follow him to the abandoned farmhouse. Father James redeems his past mistakes by protecting Olivia and Kristie, thus earning Bentz' forgiveness.

Two Graves

Two Graves (Pendergast, #12)Two Graves by Douglas Preston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is the last in the Helen Trilogy. The story opens with Pendergast and Helen meeting for the first time since her supposed death. The plan is for Pendergast to whisk Helen away to safety but a leak in the police department allows The Covenant to lay an ambush. Helen is kidnapped before Pendergast's horror struck eyes. A desperate chase ensues with Pendergast watching as Helen is killed before his eyes. He buries her in the desert and comes home a broken man contemplating suicide.

Dr. Viola Maskelene visits him and is shocked by his condition. Later trying to "help" him find a reason for living Vincent D'Agosta brings the Hotel Killer to his attention. At first Pendergast believes the hotel killer to be his brother Diogenes Dagrepont Bernoulli Pendergast (believed to have died in "The Book of the Dead") but DNA testing reveals the killer to be his "son".

Not long after an unkempt youth arrives on the doorsteps of the Dakota begging Pendergast for sanctuary. The youth reveals a shocking eugenics experiment conducted by Nazis at Nova Godoi. Twins are breed and the good twin is given every advantage the bad twin is used for manual labor and for donor organs if the good twin should need them. Bad twins are given numbers not names. 47 has escaped and come to his Father for help. He reveals that even though it is his ear, finger and toe found at the various crime scenes he is not the killer but his identical twin Alban (the good twin) is. Pendergast provides him with medical care, names him Tristram and hides him away at Riverside Drive, where he believes he will be safe from The Covenant.

Alban kidnaps Tristram from Riverside Drive and takes him back to Nova Godoi. Pendergast pursues and overcomes great odds to rescue his son. A badly injured Alban disappears into the jungle.

Corrie Swanson escaped from "The Covenants" hideout, gave the papers she pilfered to Pendergast and went to hide out with her Father, Jack Swanson. When she arrived on his doorstep unannounced she discovered he wasn't home and had been accused of stealing a car from the dealership he worked at and robbing a bank. She tracked him down, listened to his story of being framed and was able to help him prove his innocence.

Constance Greene convinced Dr. Felder of her sanity and told him what really happened to her son. She is now back at Riverside Drive.

The Silent Wife

The Silent WifeThe Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It was interesting but badly mistitled, there is NO WIFE in the entire book. Jodi and Todd were never legally married, they have just been living together for twenty years in a state that doesn't recognize common law marriages. Todd has cheated from day one and Jodi has turned a blind eye. Then Todd gets his best friend's (from highschool) daughter pg (obviously he is old enough to be her Father). She (Natasha) manipulates him into leaving Jodi by telling her Father (Dean). Dean of course calls Jodi and tells her what Todd has done, forcing Todd's hand. Todd then decides to evict Jodi from their apartment and stop paying her bills at Natasha's urging. This is too much for Jodi who is desperate to keep her home, when her friend Alison offers her a solution she jumps at it.

Slowly Jodi's childhood trauma resurfaces and we discover why she was so mute about Todd's cheating.

Todd to has a voice in the book and his serial cheating first on Jodi and then later on Natasha is the one constant in his life. The fact that not only Dean but Dean's family was there for him growing up makes the betrayal of their friendship all the more dastardly and one can hardly blame Dean for doing whatever is necessary to prevent his daughter from marrying Todd. And while Dean is accused of the crime, one can only wonder was it Dean or Jodi who ended Todd's philandering for good.

Racist Rant by Gina Miller

Most of the rabid Tea Party loonies do a better job of hiding their racism, but today Miller (Has Jackson, Mississippi, lost its mind?) was more then happy to display her bigotry and racism. Why? because a Democrat was elected mayor of Jackson, Mississippi.

Here in Mississippi, we have a conservative majority among residents; however, the population of Jackson is roughly 80 percent black and 20 percent white, and we know that a stupefying majority of black people blindly support Democrats, regardless of the Democrats' evil, destructive policies.

Really Gina? I am not sure which is more nauseating, the inference that black people are too stupid to vote and when they are allowed to vote for evil. Or the attitude that the 20% because they are white deserve a greater say in how they are governed. Never mind the fact that it is likely some of the white  20% may have actually voted for the elected mayor, and some of the black 80% may have voted for his opponent.

Gina also seems unaware that Mississippi is turning purple.

The absolutely shocking things we learned from the 2012 election are that 1) Romney probably lost because he lost the South and 2) Republicans can’t count on the South to deliver wins anymore.

As Douglas Blackmon wrote in the Washington Post, Obama “polled as well in Georgia as any Democrat since Jimmy Carter, grabbing 44% of the vote in deep-red South Carolina and just under that in Mississippi — despite doing no substantive campaigning in any of those states."

Her cherished  belief that Mississippi is a conservative (red) state is fast become a delusion. But Miller is nothing if not delusional. You can find a less biased view of Mayor Lumumba @ Chokwe Lumumba: New mayor, new era for Jackson, Mississippi ?

Styxx

Styxx (Dark-Hunter, #23)Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The best book yet and Styxx is my very favorite. Yep I like him better then Ash. Even Apollymi learns to love him. And reunites him with his wife and son (Urian). He just has to die first.

I thought it was really touching how Urian befriended him and looked after him, even before they knew of their relationship. And loved how Simi realized he was all alone and spent Styxx's birthday with him, she is such a sweet child. Unfortunately as usual Simi causes lots of trouble. Realizing the only thing Styxx wants is his wife and son, and realizing that his wife is still alive Simi tries to wake her up. Unfortunately she wakes up all the Gods that want Ash dead (Apollymi didn't kill them merely turned them to stone).

Ash's neglect of Styxx is unforgivable, amazingly Styxx forgives him. But most of the time the only time Ash cares about Styxx's whereabouts is when he needs him to pretend to be him. And then he completely ignores the fact that Styxx helps him even after he has insulted and abused him. By the time Ash realizes that his memory of the past is faulty and that Styxx isn't anything like he thought the only thing Styxx wants is to be left alone. But when Savitar ask Styxx to die for Ash he agrees.

But there are a few things that Styxx doesn't know about himself and his wife, as usual Savitar has a few secrets.

MaddAddam

MaddAddam (MaddAddam Trilogy #3)MaddAddam by Margaret Atwood
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In my opinion the best of the trilogy. Perhaps because I now know all the characters and am used to the writing style.

This book explores Adam (Adam One) and his younger brother Zeb's childhood. How they fled from abusive parents and how Adam started his spying and the God's Gardner's Cult. And how Zeb befriended the young Crake (Glen) and taught him how to hack. How Glen's Father entrusted the viral pills to Pillar, before he was killed and she used Zeb to smuggle them out. How Zeb later used three of them to kill his own Father, and how when Pillar died she had the pills delivered to Crake (Glen) and that they are the foundation for his BlyssPluss pills.

The humans and the Pigoons team up to get rid of the Painballers, who are holding Adam captive. Unfortunately Adam and Jimmy (Snowman) are killed during the battle.

Zeb and Toby marry and several of the younger women get pg by the Crakers. Not sure what the point of that was as there were human men for the women to procreate with. And the young Cracker Blackbeard takes over writing Toby's journal after she leaves them.

The Year of the Flood

The Year of the Flood (MaddAddam Trilogy, #2)The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I expected it to pick up where Oryx and Crake left off but it doesn't. Instead it starts back at the beginning from other characters points of view. Jimmy (Snowman) is a self obsessed, selfish, jerk who is totally oblivious to those around him.

Ren is Jimmy's first girlfriend. He is totally unaware of her past as a God's Gardener and makes no effort to really get to know her. He is equally unaware that his best friend Glen (Crake) is a conduit for the Gardeners as was Jimmy's Mother. Ren is a pampered Compound brat whose Mother takes up with Zeb (Mad Adam) and takes Ren with her. Ren hates living with the Gardeners until she meets Amanda. Just when Ren has adjust to life as a Gardener her Mother breaks up with Zeb and goes back to the Compound with a lie about being kidnapped. To protect Zeb and Amanda Ren goes along with it. Years later when her Father is kidnapped and the corporation refuses to pay to get him back Lucerne (Ren's Mother) kicks Ren out. She winds up pole dancing at Scales and Tails. Lucky for her she is in isolation when the pandemic breaks out.

Amanda is working on her art in a remote area when the pandemic breaks out. In phone contact with Ren, she heads to Scales and Tails to release Ren from isolation. Amanda meet Jimmy after college and had a brief affair with him unaware of his history with Ren.

Toby's Father refused to sale their farm. First her Mother who sold vitamin supplements got sick with a mysterious illness that drained their bank account. Then her Father lost his job. When Toby returns for her Mother's funeral her Father kills himself. Forced to hide his body and the gun he used (owning guns is illegal) Toby has to leave college and hide out. She winds up with the God's Gardeners and becomes an Eve. Due to an obsessed man from her past she is forced to change her identity and hide out in a spa, where she has stockpiled food and other necessities.

Zeb breaks with the God's Gardeners and starts MaddAddam. Glen (Crake) is his prized hacker. But then Glen betrays them. The Scientist are rounded up and forced to work for Glen. They are safe at Paradice when the pandemic breaks out.

Croze, Shackie and their little brother Oates are locked up in Painball when the pandemic breaks out (Crake seems to have arranged that too).

First Amanda gets to Ren and lets her out of isolation, while they are celebrating Croze, Shackie and Oates enter Scales and Tails and the former God's Gardener children are reunited. They head to the spa to see if Toby made it when they are attacked by two men who were also in Painball. Oates is killed and Amanda and Ren are raped. Ren gets away and goes to Toby for help. Once Ren is well enough she and Toby try to find Amanda. They discover Croze, Shackie, the Scientist from Paradice and Zeb.Zeb is going to look for Adam One and the Other God's Gardeners (who unfortunately seem to be infected with the virus) and Toby and Ren continue to look for Amanda. Jimmy has found the men holding Amanda first and tries to free her. Toby steps in and manages to take the two men prisoner. Jimmy's foot is severely infected, Amanda is in a very fragile state and Ren is about to fall apart.

Thank god I Don't Live in Alabama

Alabama is fast becoming the bigoted state that makes Mississippi look good by comparison. Their latest contribution is Dean Young, a young Republican politician, who has condemned homosexuality in the strongest language possible if  Gina Miller's latest rant is to be believed. You can only wonder why Gina and Dean are so full of hatred for their fellow American's. They seem to be oblivious to the fact that families are all different and that a Lesbian Mother and her children are as much a family deserving of respect as the traditional family that Miller and Young insist are the only "real" families. Thankfully in America we enjoy freedom of religion and this bigoted prejudiced hateful brand of religion championed by Miller and Young can not be forced on us.

Hopefully for Alabama Dean Young will be soundly slapped down in the primaries. His fellow Republican candidates refused to sign his "anti-homosexual pledge".

Letter To The Editor

I read with amusement Chambers assertion that The Bible was an authentic historical document.  Numerous scholarly works have shown that there is nothing “authentic” about the Bible we know today.

There are a staggering 14,800 differences from today's Bible and the oldest known Bible, the "Sinai Bible” found in the British Library.

Historical documents reveal that in 1415 the Church of Rome tried to destroy all knowledge of two second century Jewish books that it said contained the true name of Jesus Christ, "Mar Yesu" and the book of Elxai.  Pope Alexander VI ordered all copies of the Talmud destroyed. We can only wonder why the Roman Church felt so threatened by these books.

Historical documents also reveal that in 1607 King James I had the Bible re-written to his personal specifications.

Which version of the Bible does Chambers believe to be authentic, the “Sinai Bible”, The King James Bible, The Jefferson Bible, The Queen James Bible? Who gets to choose which Bible is the authentic version you should put your faith in?

Uneducated Christians choose to ignore sound historical research, fight tooth and nail to keep sound Science out of our schools (Evolution and Climate Change), and even though Mississippi has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancies in our Nation refuse to allow Comprehensive Sex Education Classes be taught in our schools. They are contributing to the ills in our society by refusing to accept reality and insisting that we all join them in la la land.

Going Down

Going DownGoing Down by John Tuepker
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Some of the information in the book was erroneous for example on page 627-628 Tuepker says "For a brief moment there was a rough plan to re-route the railroad about 10 miles north, going generally through woods, marsh and farmland" This was incorrect the land in question contained peoples HOMES. Homes that did not have flood or wind damage from Hurricane Katrina. The land in question in Jackson County was mainly suburban HOMES on 1 - 5 acres of land. In Harrison County the land would have affected an area where a large number of minorities owned homes. And none of us wanted to listen to a noisy railroad any more then Mr. Tuepker did and unlike Mr. Tuepker we did not purchase homes close to a railroad track. The people who tried to relocate the railroad tracks were mainly the rich with beachfront mansions that wanted to make the inconveniences of the railroad someone else's problem. He also seems unaware that in Jackson County the land the Railroad is located on is not owned by the railroad but exist by a prescriptive easement. This means if there is any attempt to cease the use of these tracks by the railroad the land will be returned to the heirs of this property. To be fair the consulting firm of DMJM Harris who was hired by MDOT to come up with an alternate route for the railroad were using outdated maps and at some of the earlier meetings insisted that there were no homes in the path of the railroad, until residents from Latimer showed them on their map our homes that were right smack dab in the middle of the new route (WHICH OF COURSE ADDED TO THE COST OF THE ROUTE). I blogged about this issue here  Porkbusters also did several pieces on it, and there were several Letters to The Editor in the local paper, I am not sure how Mr. Tuepker missed those.

I am actually a fan of public transportation and often make use of it when I travel. I do think he needs to consider several things. ONE our climate is not remotely like Oregon's. Expecting people to walk in torrential downpours and heat and humidity isn't realistic. Washington DC has tunnels for you to walk in so you don't have to deal with the weather, but because of our high water table tunnels wouldn't be feasible here. Secondly we are very spread out and plans for public transport would have to factor this in. WE DO HAVE A PUBLIC BUS SYSTEM SOME OF WHICH HAVE BICYCLE RACKS.

I enjoyed the part of the book that was autobiographical some of the info was dated as the book was written before the Presidential Election and he spends a lot of time talking about the candidates. And like lots of people of my parents generation he spends a lot of time ranting about the changes that have taken place since the 1950s.

As a victim of Hurricane Katrina, I was surprised he didn't mention the need for All Perils Insurance as championed by former Congressman Gene Taylor (D).

He also advocates a luxury sales tax on some items, but as his list of items demonstrate it is patently unfair. He thinks makeup should be taxed at 20%. Since he is a man I am sure he doesn't use makeup and apparently sees no need for anyone else to do so. Never mind that most of today's makeup contains UV protection that helps prevent skin cancer. He also list cell phones as a luxury item completely oblivious that some families have chosen to do away with their land lines.

It was an interesting read.
